Caught over 40 today on the Brazos. These fish were looking up today. There was a lot of surface activity, so I thought they might eat a popper. First cast, fish ate, rod bent, and this went on for hours. This is a first for me, I don't think these fish knew they were crappie. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I have only seen this twice. Once at Buddy Stewart park on the north end of Pat Cleburne Lake, and once in a 20 acre pond that I grew up on in Joshua. Although I wasn't fly fishing, I can only imagine that it would've been a really enjoyable experience. In the five years I guided crappie for a full time living at Cedar Creek, I never saw it happen.

It's really awesome you got to see something so rare and had a fly rod in your hand at the same time.

Everything fell in line today. I took full advantage of this occurrence. Go Frogs!

Go Frogs indeed. You being out of Grandview, I got a feeling we stomped a lot of the same grounds.

I'm pretty sure. Springtime in this area is a great playground for fishermen. If you're ever in the area, let me know.

Just so happened I moved back over the winter time and have been visiting the waters I grew up on quite a bit lately. It's been very rewarding to see how much I was missing when I was in high school, and could only fish what I could see with my eyes. The only hole I haven't revisited is the Brazos, which ironically, was the place I spent the most time on in high school and college, primarily the area between Lake Whitney and Pecan Plantation. Shoot me a PM if you want to join us sometime. I don't fly fish often, but I bet we could tackle some fly fishing records at the local DFW lakes.

Didn't realize you were talking popper that big. You've been on some slabs now if this rain tomorrow will bring in the the fat lady sandbass.

Very nice! Interesting fly, sizable crappie! I've had a couple of times when I had crappie on a small lake behind my house in suburban Chicago rising to March Brown Comparaduns at sundown, but they were much smaller than yours.
