That is assuming they reduce the flows ever again. I've kayaked and canoed that stretch numerous times but don't remember what they were releasing.

Well, I don't remember exactly but I think I typically go if it's less than 1,000cfs. If I remember correctly, it can be a pain paddling back up stream at the flow though.

I've launched in 400, it's hella tough. 200 is good, always go upstream, have the current bring you back down to your launch..
I'm pretty experienced, and I use pedal yaks, I still had trouble with 400. was out there yesterday in 100cfs, I had to drag alot.
Wear waders, and leash your bow for comfy dragging

First off, if you're a 'rank amateur,' then you should not be paddling this stretch without someone who has experience on on it.

Having said that, depends on what you want to do. If they're already releasing when you arrive, then 2,000 cfs is a fun, relatively safe site seeing tour that gets you from Riverside Park to Dicks, with minimal paddling, in about two hours (fishing, on the other hand becomes tricky and not worth the work, IMHO). Of course, that is assuming, Riverside Park is open. These days that's a bad assumption. 1,000 cfs is a much fishier trip, and the highest release I would do if I was boomeranging from and to the dam.

The problem is if they release while you're already down river and your intent was to go back. At 2,000 cfs, the average paddler would not make it from Coon Creek back to the dam. Anymore when I paddle that stretch, I always leave myself the option to cut my losses and run the river to Dicks in case they release on me. A lot less work than paddling back against the release, and a scenic float.

Thanks everyone! Advice and concerns are noted and appreciated. I've used Dick's several times, both starting at the dam and paddling upstream from his place. Mostly canoes but some kayaking as well. Just couldn't remember what the flows were and it sounds like they've been really high for some time now. I want to say my best fishing days happened when the flow started at 200 but even those days were cut short when flows jumped up to 1,200 (I think) by mid-afternoon.

PS - if I'm looking at the right USGS Gauge (08093100 Near Aquilla), it looks like the flow was reduced over this last weekend including Monday until noon. Not sure if that was a coincidence or if they might be reducing on weekends now, but worth noting. Maybe too low for some as they kept it at 50 cfs for a couple of days.

B-Rod gives some great advice by always having the back up plan to make the full trip down to Dicks. Ive been caught several times a few miles down river and hear that horn blow. I have always managed to make it back but it can be very tiring and take some time when the flow gets over 1,000 cfs. I will not get on the river there if I have an idea that a release is coming that is over 2500 cfs. Keep an eye on the gauges and stay safe!

Yup. It was actually a high gunwale, duck boat looking thing. He was a fly fisherman there with his fishing club that day.
