Just curios.
If you had $500.00 to spend on a rod or reel would you buy the rod to go with a reel you already have (In my case that would be a $200.00 reel),
or would you buy a reel to go with the rod you already have (in my case it would be a $200.00 rod).
I personally would split it up and get both with the $500.00.
My question is, is one much more important than the other?

Thanks for your opinions.

$300 dollar rod, $200 Reel or Megabass Orochi + Shimano Chronarch ( purchased used can be had in the $300 - $350 range) + Sunline Sniper Line

I don't want to skip quality on either item as they are a system and a system is only as good as the weakest link. And yes, you can catch fish with lower cost equipment but why would you want to if you don't have to?

Reel. I can step on the reel and not damage it.

Do you love the reel you have??? if that is the case I'd go buy a power tackle and have some money left for line, baits etc.

If you DONT like the reel you have... sell it and then use 500+ sale of reel and get a combo (look at a metanium)

in general I spend my money on the REEL, they last longer

Unless I was doing this for a living, that's an outrageous amount of money to spend on one item.
It's funny, the Castaway rod I bought for $27 on Amazon catches just as many fish as that high dollar rod you're fishing with. So does the older quantum reel that I think I paid $89 for 10 years ago.
Some of these products catch more fishermen than fish in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong...when I worked as a guide, my personal equipment was the best I could buy...however I'm not making KVD money fishing...but that's just me.

I usually look for used high end rods / reels. I have some set ups that would cost close to a grand if purchased new, that have cost me less than $500 total. I realize that wasn't the question, but if I was going to spend that much it would be on a rod. There are some great reels in the $200 range.

Example for me, I would really like to get a Shimano Metanium for my next flipping set up, but I just can't bring myself to spend close to $450 on a reel. I have a few Core's but they where bought used. I am comfortable buying used reels because even if there is a problem I can take it to SW parts and have it fixed fairly cheap.

There's nothing that a $500 rod can do that I can't do just as well with a $100-$200 rod.

I wouldn't spend $500 on a reel either.

It would be probably a reel and 2 rods for me.

The rod for sure. I didn't believe the hype until I started fishing G.Loomis rods. My 1st NRX made a true believer out of me. As far as reels go I use mostly Curados and Chronarchs. I see no need for a $550 rod for anything other than bottom contact lures and then only for longer line applications.
