Yes, Wheeler Branch would be the dream kayaker lake owing to its super clear water, no boats zooming by, typically only light pressure on the lake, if that.
I really messed up Sunday by relying on a wind forecast that kept me on the bank, my kayak at home in the garage. It turned out to be a very low wind day and the water looked great! Two boats (idle only) and one kayaker had it all to themselves.
Nothing much biting from the bank as the fish are still apparently deep or back in the warmer coves. My bank fishing buddy said the kayaker caught two back in the shallows, then they turned off.
60 degrees back there but 43 degrees down deep according to the scuba divers out there.
Another 2 to 4 weeks? If the bass move into the shallows, you'll have a blast fishing from a kayak.
Another lake I have yet to fish is Cedar Lake in Cleburne State Park. It has a great look to it, trails around it, family oriented. Fishing is just so-so I have heard.

Brad R. Wheeler Branch is not "idle only" for boats. That'll get you thrown out! All boats are trolling motor only. They will let you load with your outboard though.

Brad R. Wheeler Branch is not "idle only" for boats. That'll get you thrown out! All boats are trolling motor only. They will let you load with your outboard though. My bad! Yes, of course, it is "trolling only" on Wheeler Branch. Thanks for catching my error. As most politicians are fond of saying these days: "I must have mis-remembered!" And, really, the lake is so small that it doesn't even inconvenience the big bass boats out there. I have seen several of them work more or less the whole lake just as we often do so in kayaks/jon boats, etc. Where lakes have that "idle only" or "no wake" policy areas, it is so open to interpretation and usually ends up just being ignored. Marine Creek comes to mind. *** Weather looks best for Saturday out at Wheeler and I am itching to go. I am sooooo mad that the wind forecast was wrong Sunday, left me standing on the bank . . . while my buddies were catching fish from their vessels! Brad

any of you ever catch any walleye at Wheeler branch? I haven't, but D.L. and Bert, posters here, are experienced walleye guys having fished them in more northern waters with good success. The three of us met up and gave it a go back in November or so, saw some fish on the electronics that I guess could have been walleye. I caught a single LMB that day as I recall. Not much of anything biting that day. But, a frequent kayaker out there, Brett, has caught several. And, I have seen a couple caught by boaters. Few people target the species on Wheeler, seem to catch them almost by mistake. Walleye eat like all fish so someone is going to figure them out sooner or later. Brad

As Brad said, I have fished for many walleye (up North!), and only have managed 1 out of Wheeler Branch so far. Too many "ditch pickles" get in my way! Caught a few giant bluegills there, too. As this thread started out as "DFW area kayaker", and South side interest I think, there are some awesome fishing lakes in this area. Some already mentioned, but here's my list of places I frequent:
Cleburne State Park (Cedar Lake) Wheeler Branch Brazos River (Hamm Creek Park launch) Purtis Creek State Park (not South side, but cool little lake) Waxahachie Navarro Mills Bardwell Mineral Wells State Park Aquilla (Soon to add Clark Lake with Brad?)
Hope this helps
D.L.
