I've read some posts on the forum about using this technique for catching white bass.
I'm just getting back into fishing for whites this year after a long hiatus. I've never
heard of this.

Can someone who has used this technique with success explain exactly what this is and
how you do it ?

thanks ! Chris

I don't know about trolling with real minnows, but we'll troll a sassy shad sometimes. People drift with live shad once they find the general area the fish are in but not troll exactly.

I buy umbrella rigs, toss the plastic baits that come with them, and replace them with live minnows hooked by the lip. If the whites are in the river, and you are trolling, this will out fish anything in my experience, at least on Canyon lake which is where I fish.

Canyon is where I am going to go. So you troll them on an umbrella rig like you would troll any other bait, that is
under power with the outboard, not low speed with an electric motor ?

I've caught them both sandies and stripers with shiners or shad by slow trolling for crappie. If you want to target sand bass you can skip the minnows and just use a roadrunner. If it flashes they will hit it. Sand bass are kind of like sun perch, they hit everything that moves and are not difficult to catch if the water is above 50. If you mark fish and they don't bite they are not sandbass.

Correct, idling along with my motor in gear. I've added sliding weights to get them deeper in the past, but last year I did not and it worked out fine. Good luck.
