Never fished a spawn before. Do they actively spawn at night as well, or will I need to fish them like I would for pre/post spawn?

Females make major moves at night to spawning grounds.

They move in in waves though the night.

Sometimes they will still be there at sunrise but for me they have usually moved back into deeper water by then.

I catch them under bridges leading into creeks at night while they are spawning. They'll run back and forth, you can really load the boat up.

When the spawn is on...bring your lantern or firewood, repellent, snacks, snake charmer, and coffee...during the spawn I fish from dusk till dawn...more often than not...Great Question!

When you ask if they "actively spawn" at night are you asking if they will bite or are they doing the nasty?

I take it you are asking about them biting and YES they are biting all the time when hungry or an invader comes into their "love nest".

I am catching lots of them in creeks and channels shallow about 4 feet down right now at night. I use lights but right now the lights do not matter very much. They are more to attract bait fish if none present. I can't tell you if they are doing the nasty when I am catching them but if they were I surely interrupted them!

Guah, I think crappie fisherman look forward to the spawn for married people things jokes just as much as the fishing....

Thanks for the input I was talking about fishing like you would for actively spawning fish, putting your jig on reeds and sticks, dock posts, etc looking for beds. Or if the strategy would be targeting them like they are "staging" just off of where the nests are.

and no they are not spawning yet...

erit, Spawning crappie are usually caught within 6" of the bank, around rocks, timber, brush, holes in the bank, even the bare bank for that matter...drop a small 1/32 ounce jig in the water six inches to a foot deep, flutter it a bit and hang on...if no bite, the drop it on the bottom for a few seconds and get ready...if no bite, then lift it off bottom and flutter it along the bank a bit at a time...all the way down the bank...until you get bit...

You flutter the jig to imitate either an injured minnow or a minnow feeding on eggs, or a baby frog in the wrong place at the wrong time(if you are using one of Laners frogs)...works line a charm...if you move away from the bank to stickups reeds, etc., hold the jig still, as if it is resting when you first drop it...then slowly flutter it around or along the structure, then rest it again...during this time it drives those crappie crazy and the males will viciously attack it...the females more often than not, will pick it up to move it off the nest and drop it, sometimes barely noticeable, so a sensitive rod is helpful. If you can feel the lack of jig pressure, set the hook and bring the big girl in to introducer her to the stringer...

Always remember this, when you are fishing away from the bank, the beds will be on the bottom, so fish a few inches above the bottom, no matter what water depth you are fishing, but drop it to the bottom, then raise it a bit, then flutter it a bit, then move/flutter it a bit...if the crappie are there, you will have a good stringer of them to take home to eat...and before you ask, crappie will spawn to depths of at least 15 feet, depending on a number of factors, but that is a whole nuther discussion and tends to be lake specific depending on how those factors stack up together.

Also, during the spawn, color selection is not overly critical, so don't rush out and buy a color someone else is using, just use a color you have confidence in...and follow the aforementioned advice, and you will have success...As always, I hope this information helps.

Target the staging areas.
