I have been to welsh 5 times in the last 3 weeks. The power plant has not been on . Yesterday the water coming out of the plant was 63 degrees the lake was around 52 at daybreak . We saw a few bass on the beds after around noon. Fishing has been slow compared to previous years around Valentine's week. Water is cooler than previous years.

Open up Google maps and find Welsh reservoir. See that big pile up coal? The EPA doesn't like that stuff.

It wouldn't be so bad if the plants would be adapted for natural gas while stilling producing, switched over and then allowed to operate. NOT! That would make way too much sense. They close the plant down or greatly reduce its operation and then have rolling black-outs.

This would make sense!

Wether we like it or not EPA has a loud voice and coal fired plants days are numbered. Very unfortunate. I thought the installation of scrubbers was supposed to make them happy. Guess not.

It's called Obama's war on coal. It has cost 100's of thousands of jobs to further an idealistic, phony climate change policy.

Cheers, cheers

You can't switch a coal fired plant to natural gas. The scrubbers did satisfy the epa for a little while but like a kid that just ate his last piece of candy, now they are crying for more. I retired after 35 years of digging coal. There's a lot more bologna on that sandwich than what the public can see.

So you're saying that no engineering firm can do a project to retrofit a POWER PLANT to another fuel source? ....in other words, they have to tear the entire plant down, haul the debris away, and build from scratch? THere's a lot more to a power plant than just the boiler. One could replace the boiler 100% if need be, and that would be a lot less costly than building an entirely new plant.

Yes, tear it down and build a whole new plant. The most economical way to burn gas to make power is through a gas turbine (which generates power).... the exhaust heat from that gas turbine is captured through a boiler which in turn produces steam (basically free from the running of the gas turbine) to run a steam turbine (which also will generate power). A coal fired plant has a steam turbine .... no body is gonna burn a bunch of gas in a boiler just to make steam.

OK, you just said that a gas plant has two stages: gas turbine, and (secondary power) steam turbine. The steam turbine is run by a boiler using waste heat from the gas turbine. A coal plant uses a boiler/coal combo to drive a steam turbine. The generation part of an existing coal plant IS the secondary stage of a gas-fired plant.

Power plants often have multiple boilers so that generation can be matched to demand. A coal-powered plant already has a steam control system and steam turbines driven by each boiler. That's the second stage of the gas powered plant. Yes, any boiler that will remain must be retrofitted to heat using the gas turbine exhaust instead of coal. So, add gas turbines to heat one or more existing boilers on site (that gets retrofitted for heat source) and you've got a new plant without tearing down an entire infrastructure. A 3-line plant may be scaled back to 2-line because there would be two stages to each line (original steam turbines + added gas-fired turbines).

I'll back up a little. Some coal burners can be converted if they fall into certain parameters.
