Hi folks!

I'm renting a home on the Quadalupe River near New Braunfels for a few months and have caught a 9" gill and 10" redbreast from the back yard on a fly rod. I've also managed some longear and redear on other rivers in the hill country. Yeah, I'm hooked on sunfish. smile

I'd love to catch a green, warmouth (unless that is the same as a rock bass) and especially a texas cichlid on a fly rod while I'm here.

I'm heading over to Cypress Bend Park and Landa Park next week and wonder how my chances of catching one of my 3 desired species are. Is one spot better than the other? I don't really care about size or numbers.

Thanks,
Harry

Right now during the winter months sunfish are usually not very active. yawn I know the areas Cypress Bend Park and Landa Park very well and the sunfish bite is normally slow during this time of year. hmmm Landa Park being a warm water river(Comal River), you may have some luck there. The Comal will start producing some super nice Redbreast during March and April. Also the Blanco River is not that far away and the sunfish bite will be getting active as well. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do. thumb

Side Note: As for the Rio's. The Comal is loaded with them. Late March through October the Rios will be active. The Guadalupe also has a good population of Rios. coolio

Thanks for the response Banker. I headed out to the Comal and to Cypress Bend Park today to look for my missing species. I don't think I caught any of them but have an unidentified fish from the Comal. Likely a bluegill but I'm not at all sure. Maybe someone here can offer an ID.
[Edit] I now suspect this is a red spotted sunfish which would also be super since it's a first!

I also caught a bunch of nice redbreasts, gills and a largemouth. The largemouth was fun since I was fishing a 3/4 wt fly rod and there was a bit of brush in the water. Still looking for a rio, a green and a warmouth. smile

Cheers,
Harry

Nice fish. The first fish is a Red Spotted Sunfish. They do not get very big but are a very aggressive fish. The Comal River is loaded with them. Your Bass kind of looks like a Guadalupe or Small Mouth Bass. Looks like you had a super day. Good job on the fly. thumb

Thanks for the help on the bass. Definitely not a Smallmouth but now looks like a Guadalupe. Back home most of our bass are Smallmouth and only a couple of lakes hold Largemouth. We also only have Bluegills in one lake and Pumpkinseeds in another...hence my fascination with sunfish.
