Just curious what do you guys use to thin your fly head cement? Paint thinner? mineral spirits? lacquer thinner?

I use clear cure goo because never have found a cement that I liked. But I would think any of the above would be ok. On the base of the hook under the body if any used super glue is best and does not need thinner.

I use DST wet look lacquer. Plenty thin right out of the can and no thinning needed. fast drying, will work to seal eyes as well although I am slowly going to strictly D2T for sealing eyes.

If for the drop of glue at the finish on chenille jigs use High Gloss Lacquer and thin with MEK. I like this because it's cheap over the long run. Have the same qt of each I started with over 10 years ago. Soaks in and dries fast!

I should also say I use another one I make on thread neck jigs. You can use Softex for that too, but not chenille jigs.

I mix as I need. I just keep a little plastic bottle that has a metal tube with cap. I mix it somewhere close to 50/50, I do not measure that!

Larry, I got the idea from Skip & it took me nearly a year to find a quart of MEK but finally I did. I bought a 3 pack of restaurant plastic squeeze bottles, like 24oz I think & poured most of the Gloss Lacquer in 1 and most of the qt of MEK in 1 and mixed the 2 50/50 in the other. Then all I have to do is give the mixed bottle a squeeze to fill my little applicator bottle & im good to go! I've been using it for several months now & I LOVE it! I gotta get over to Skips place though & see how he puts a "drop" on a jig cuz I obviously am using more than I need to! Anyway, it's good stuff!

That is what I mean, everyone buys them little bottles of head cement and fingernail polish and get a tiny bit for a couple bucks! This way one cost that last years and years. I bet that I have been using that for over 10 years really and have enough to go a lot longer. I know 5 more years worth, LOL!

A quart of both Minwax clear brushing gloss lacquer & Klean strip MEK would set you back about $25. Not bad at all.

Pepop, the mixed bottle doesn't "drie up", as long as the cap is on that squeeze bottle???? If so, I will have to start hunting down these components. thumb

I only mix a small amount at one time and leave them in the cans I bought them in. Then I keep some of each in a glass bottle or jar and only mix the 2 in the little plastic bottle with the metal tub. That way I don't have to worry about adding more thinner later. There has been times I add some thinner to my little use bottle too.

I just think since it last so long mixing may lead to needing to thin more later?? I don't know. I do know the qt containers I originally bought over 10 years ago still have a lot in them!
