Just wondering what people's assessment of the lack of sharelunkers this year. I am curious if it is due to tough fishing conditions, or if people are not turning their lunkers in due to the press last year of lunkers dying.

My guess is both of the above.
But good spawns this year should get that pendulum to swing back the other way before long.

But good spawns this year should get that pendulum to swing back the other way before long.
Would a successful spawn create an overpopulation of bass, and decrease the forage base and lead to skinny fish. Would low spawn numbers be better so there is more forage per bass. Or does the good spawn go even better for the bait fish as well, so it's just better numbers all around. And if a Share Lunker takes (say) 10 years. It's going to be 2026 till this years spawn get to 13lb status. Sorry just lot's of pondering.

If the weather keeps holding in this warming pattern I would suspect you will see an influx of sharelunkers soon.

Historically, 44% SALs are caught in March, 26% in Feb, 13% in Apr and 17% for all other months combined.
Fork doesn't have near the number of teenage fish it used to. Alan Henry and Ivie fell off due to the drought and Austin due to loss of grass and increased pressure. Rayburn has produced at least two this season, but only one was turned in and she was an FX. I think aging fisheries and 13# fish dying while in TPWDs care are both contributors to why we're seeing fewer SALs these days.

Toledo Bend seems to be the hot lake this year, and they have their own lunker program there, It seems that most people are not turning them in on that lake , I think I saw a couple already caught and released on that lake this year

Did the big fish die off or are they still their but fishermen just don't know how to catch them now?

It appears to me that over the last couple years the forage base has disappeared, the white bass population has exploded, and the bass population has become either much smaller or much harder to find and the fish do not look as healthy as they once did. In my opinion, loss of forage and cover = loss of big fish.

Another possibility: The drastic change in the water this year (depth, clarity, temperature) and the weird half winter or dry El Nio we are experiencing has affected the normal movements of trophy-class bass. Maybe we are on different patterns based on where we think the fish are, but they have just scattered out and aren't there. Get a normal spring, clear up some of the water, and maybe it will turn back on!
