With the temps warming, I'm considering going. Anyone been lately? Any recommendations on where or what to fish with?

I've had luck along the dam with a rapala minnow, black/silver.

Thanks! Was this recently or in prior years? Was thinking about throwing jerkbait among other options.

FTR, I've also had luck along the dam throwing t-rigged bushhogs and north of the island throwing Senko's but this was during the early April time frame.

I fished it 2 weeks ago and it was still very slow. I caught one LMB off the island early on using one of the new VMC Gliding Jigs with a small plastic paddle tail on it. I got skunked drop shotting in several locations on the lake and so did JJ who I fished along with for a couple of hours.

My impression is they are generally still very deep, haven't moved in to the shallows quite yet. But, Wheeler really turns on once the water warms up, so this Friday might be the beginning of something! We will need a report.

It is supposedly going to be very windy tomorrow and it seems to be magnified on Wheeler. I sometimes hide out on the leeward side of the island, or in a cove with little wind. And, sometime hugging along the dam works if the wind blows over the dam.

Anyway, let us know how you make out. There are few lakes with water than clear and clean . . . makes it one of the top kayaking lakes, I think.

Thanks Brad! Ironically, you may have just talked me out of it. Not sure I want to drive 2 hours just to get skunked and I've fought that wind tooth and nail on previous occasions. If I don't report back, it's cuz I didn't go. If I go, wherever I go, I'll give a report.

I last fished there several months ago. nothing recent.

Gosh, when they are on the beds in the spring, you can circumnavigate the lake and find them everywhere. But, for a small lake, Wheeler is very deep at around 80 feet as I recall. And, it catches lots of wind which keeps the better oxygenated than some lakes I think so I don't think there is as pronounced a thermocline issue. It does have a very nice fish (LMB) population, but I think they go deep over the winter, at least that is what it seems like.

I love it though . . . clearest/cleanest water in North Texas.

If we can watch the wind reports over on Windfinder, a bunch of us ought to plan a day down there one weekend in March or whenever the water sort of gets near 60 degrees in the shallows.

I decided to stay close to home this weekend so no Wheeler Branch report. Bank fished the Trinity River between Ray Roberts and Lewisville this afternoon and managed mostly small crappie with enough keepers for a meal for myself and my folks. River is moving very fast but I was fishing in a side creek. Looks like it would be a fun float when the flow goes down.

Wheeler is great during spring and summer. During the colder months it is tough to fish. If you like fishing deep than wheeler can be very good. If you paddle to the island directly from the ramp and fish that side in 20-30 ft you will mark tons of fish. There is also a submerged bridge/culvert that usually holds fish in 23ft of water. During the summer you can catch them schooling up all over the lake. I fish wheeler quite a bit. Pm if you need advice.
