I'm moving down to the hill country and looking to dive into the tournament scene when I get there.

What are the best lakes for size down there and the best for numbers? Within 2 hours of SA.

Also, what trails or clubs run through there? The only ones I know are champs and TTZ in Austin.

Best average for size would be L.B.J. Best for numbers I would say Bastrop. A little further SE is Coleto Creek and it can be pretty amazing come froggy season!

The best for size in my opinion would probably be Dunlap. Lots of big fish in there.

As far as tournaments, there is a weekly tournament that starts on March 17th that alternates between Canyon and Dunlap every Thursday Night. Last year we averaged 31 teams a week and had some nice payouts and some teams won some Skeeter bonus money. Nice $3000+ payout on a $40 entry for fishing for 3 1/2 hours.

Bastrop for numbers. Fayette County is 2 hours away which might not be "close" to you but I wish it was only 2 hours from me. Any East Texas lake is further than that for me.

Ive fished Fayette a few times before. It's a decent little lake. Seems like any time I see it on here, all anyone says is how scary busy it is.

It gets pounded December-March. Once the spawn starts on the big reservoirs it becomes a lot more tolerable.

Imho "close" to san Antonio.... In order

Bastrop(numbers and overall experience), LBJ for best shot of NUMBERS and some size, Fayette for pure numbers...

The Thursday tourney is fun and you will likely meet a few good folks, it will start right after the "time change". Some spin off small tourney's have popped up from those groups and are a ton of fun and really laid back.

Tons of great water from Austin to Del Rio to Falcon...pretty much every direction has a great fishery!

Are the Thursday night tournaments 3 fish or 5 fish?

But Fayette has been managed as a trophy lake since it opened. Shouldn't it be rated for size? hmmm
