I added some fresh cut, big cedar trees under the boathouse late last summer and it looks like they are starting to pay off. Water was 58-60 degrees in the afternoon. I caught 6 crappie off of the boathouse yesterday afternoon, 12" to 14" size on Texas Toast Slab Bandits. I don't think they are ready to spawn just moving shallow & feeding on shad in preparation.
They were 5' deep in 6' of water. Males were not black yet and females were fat & healthy but not bulging with eggs.
So don't think it's too early to fish shallow.
The Truth is six of the seven Dwarfs are not Happy!

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?
