I found a pond close to my work that I went and fished today and it is packed full of carp. I don't have any experience catching carp on a fly and had zero luck getting them to bite anything that I threw. I was wondering if someone who has experience catching carp on a fly could meet me there and show me what I'm doing wrong and try to help me catch my first carp on a fly. I could even come and pick you up if you would like. It's in the Richardson area so anyone who would be interested please let me know.
Also, I noticed a few carp completely leap out of the water a few times while I was there. I thought this was kind of weird because I thought that carp were strictly bottom feeders, but I also noticed a lot of them foraging on the surface of the water. I know that they were carp, I could tell by the shape of their bodies, their color and their pink lips. Is this a normal thing for carpto do?

Carp are omnivores and will pretty much eat anything or try to eat anything they come across. That being said the jumping activity you see is most probably the carp dislodging garbage from gill's and pharyngeal teeth. Carp will bite the fly needs to be directly in front of its face even better if you can get it to drop right in front of the carp carp's face you will need to look for lips to flash white and gill flare and set the hook. It's not easy at first but once you catch a few and know what to look for it's pretty simple to go out and catch them if you can find them

This time of year, jumping = spawning.

They're not usually in the eating mood while they're spawning from what I've read. Is that correct?

That can be true, but instinct can still trigger a bite.

Carp are tough... You have to make a perfect cast, they're not predator fish so they don't attack. Anything small, crustacean like is what I throw. Personal favorite is a bonefish fly in olive called the Bonefish Bitters. Check it out, and good luck! If they are mudding they're eating, much easier to catch them during this time than the cruising and jumping.
