I hate to bring it up again since things got a little surly last time, but I'm curious about it. My best guess is that you would have about $2.50-3.00 in each bait. It seems these things sale from between $8-15. I could easily spend an hour working on one of the more detailed baits that I've painted. I haven't really timed it, but I smoke a cigar while doing it. I've also not really tried to do 5 at a time, so maybe I could get 5 done in less than 5 hours--maybe more like 2.5 hours. Even at $15/bait, that's not a lot of money. I'd have to produce a ton of these things to even make it worthwhile--not that I'm ready to start selling them (I have been encouraged to do so by a local tackle store). I could make a lot more money designing websites, logos and packaging for those of you that are trying to make a go at it.

So, here is the question...Is it worth it to you? Maybe cash isn't what gives you satisfaction. I know brad had about $1500 in sales at the fun-n-sun tackle show, but it seems he was painting like a mad man. Maybe you do it to offset the expense of doing it for yourself. Maybe you are hoping to parlay it into something else.

What say you? Is it worth it to you?

I enjoy doing them. It's another creative outlet for me that doesn't have a client/boss telling me that they know how to do it better than I do. I just get to create. Hopefully, I'll actually get some of them wet one day. I did get a report that one of my bluegill patterns caught a 4lber on toledo yesterday. That's pretty cool.

No possible way to make money at it painting 1 bait at a time, if you figure you paint 1 per hour and have 3 bucks in it material wise and sell for 10 your making less than minimum wage.

I can paint 7-10 baits per hour in most of the patterns I sell, figuring it that way I can make 35-40 bucks per hour. It's a little less than that if you figure the time spent ordering supplies, building up the baits, packaging, and mailing. I come out to about 12-15 bucks per hour after you figure all time involved in the process and not just painting time. I'm not looking to make a career out of it just offset cost and help pay for the addiction. I have not even attempted to get into tackle stores because they are goin to want to make money off them to, and that's going to cut into my profit that is already to low.

Just my opinion about sales and pricing and others will have different thoughts I'm sure.

Thanks for the reply Brad. I need to figure out if I can get a system that will allow me to produce more baits at a time. I'd have to price things on the high end of the market either way.

I always paint a minimum of 5 baits per color pattern if they are sold or not if my order is for 3 I just paint 2 extra and set them back. Painting volume is the only way to make money at it and also wastes less paint for me.

I feel like painting in volume is the easy part..finding someone to buy all of them for what you want is the tricky part lol

No,...if you do it because you like it, be glad if you break even..
