I wanted to know what would be the best hook and size to get for crappie? I heard tru turn #4 or #2 works. Any advice for the best hook ups with live minnows also do you find it better to hook up through the lips or behind the top fin?

Here's the best make/model...period:

Eagle Claw EL214 - EL for Extra Light #2 hook. Thinner and lighter to provide less weight for minnow to have to deal with...and yes it can handle big ol' crappie. We have trusted it for tournament fishing for over a decade now.

Matzuo Aberdeen sickle hook.

Sharpest hook made and sticks them right in the roof of the mouth in the heavy meat. I've had too many get off from Tru-turns hooking them in the side of the mouth where its soft.

Ed@ ProAngler sells them: http://proanglertackle.com/CrappieHooks.htm

Guess I am an outlier here...I always used the tru-turn light wire hooks in a 3/0 or 4/0, in gold. BUT, I only fish with minnows at night in deep water (>12ft) anymore...I use jigs now almost exclusively, day or night. Hope this information helps.

Yes sir these are awesome hooks.I rarely loose a crappie on these,I got tired of losing them biguns right on the surface with other hooks.

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?

Thanks fellas. Does color matter? Im going to try those eagle claw 2s extra lights should do good. I have some bps marked and Im going to try to anchor off them amd cast a minnow under a cork in depths 4 to 8 ft. Put that minner right on top of that bp. See if this works because I cant seem to get the boat steady over the pile with the trolling motor.

A gold Aberdeen size 4 is the best all around crappie hook.

"I ain't drownt a minner in purt near 40 years ever since that old feller showed me how to jig fish!!!"

Not really, but thought i'd go ahead and throw that out since I've heard it about 1000 times whenever the subject of using minnows comes up.
I use whatever works best at the time including hooking a minnow onto a jig sometimes.

I've used everything from #4 to 4/0. Went through a spell where 4/0 was all i used under a cork.
I guess nowadays, #2 to 2/0 is probably what I mostly use

I always hook minnows through their lips being careful to not go too far back and hit their brain.

Mostly aberdeen style and usually gold. I tried true turn for a while but didn't really like them.
I've used gold, red, green, bronze, and black and really I don't think hook color matters one bit.

The size is not nearly so important as keeping the point needle sharp. Some sharpen easier than others, but most of them can be dull right out of the box.
Matzuo sickle hooks and Lazer Sharp being the exception about dull fresh out of the box but I still check those too.

By habit, i check them regular and anytime after I've pulled loose from being hung up. Don't know how, but a piece of brush can dull the point.
If they slide off my thumbnail the slightest bit instead of digging straight in, they get a good sharpening with a stone or diamond rod.
That right there has increased my hook ups and landing rate on crappie more than anything else I have ever done.

I fished with a guy once who was using minnows on a roadrunner. He would miss 10 or 11 out of 12 bites and not hook up. i checked and his hook looked like it had been drug point down across a concrete boat ramp. I offered to sharpen it for him and teach him how to do it and he declined, said it was OK like it was.
I only offered once and then shut up and let him continue to miss hooking up on fish after fish while i was steady putting them in the basket. SMDH
