Friends, I am looking at buying a fishing rig from out of state. It is my understanding that I will have to get the boat/motor/trailer weighed on certified scales in order to register the boat trailer. Does anyone know of a good place to get this done in the Longview/Marshall/Tyler area? Thanks

Most of your truck stops have certified scales and can print it for you

It's probably rated weight. If so ... A 5 lug axle is worth 3500 lbs. A tandem axle trailer would be 3500 x 2.

Otherwise the Pony Express should have some scales. You may could call Nash Trucking and ask if you could use theirs.

*Assuming your in Marshall since that's not usually lumped into the Longview / Tyler area unless your from Marshall.

Just noticed Carthage on your location. Both of those locations I mentioned are in Marshall.

Thanks for the help, guys. It would be great if they no longer require actually weighing the whole fishing rig. I have bought two trailers from out of state (one a single axle pop up RV and the other a double axle RV). They would not let me register either without actual certified weights. Since it has been four years since I bought a trailer from out of state, I am hoping it is no longer required.

If I have to have it weighed, it's nice to know I can get it done in Marshall. Just a quick zip up hiway 59.

I just went thru this with a boat I boat out of Okla, an untitled boat trailer or any trailer that gross weight is under 4,000 doesn't have to have a title in Texas I went to the local tag office in Bryan told them the trailer weighed 1,000 and carry weight was 4,000. Didn't ask for a weight ticket, kept the gross weight Under 4500 so no inspection either, just my expire end last week

Had my boat and trailer weighed last week, anticipating I may need to have trailer inspected. Dual axle trailer with a 21 foot BassCat.

Had both axles weighed, and total gross weight was 3560. I went online and registered my boat. Didn't need the weights.

My question is, since my gross weight is under 4500, I shouldn't have to inspect the trailer, right? Each axle is RATED 3500, so 3500 x 2 = 7000, but the actual weight is under 4500. Inspect trailer or not?

I had to on my basscat because the trailer was rated for 4500 by the manufacturer.
Denton was a PIA they wanted the trailer weighed without the boat on it. Basscat faxed MSO over to them and they pushed it through. Had it weighed with the boat and was 4050 lbs.

Are you using some special math? I'd like you to explain how 1000# trailer and 4000# carried weight keeps the gross weight under 4500#. Carried weight is what you put ON the trailer, so my old-school math gets 5000 gross weight.

Yes, so that's my question, because my trailer is RATED for 4500, but actual gross is under 4500. I've had people tell me both ways, to have it inspected, and not to have it inspected.

My reading of the TPW website says if the gross is under 4500 you don't have to have it inspected.

Guess it really doesn't matter now. I was able to renew my registration online and have already gotten my stickers. Just wondering if some GW will try to ticket me.....??

I was just reading some .gov for TXDOT and it seems that the key is having the registration sticker on your tag. If you have that, the state is apparently satisfied that you've met their requirements. Officers are looking for the registration sticker. If ya got it, you're good. There may be cases where incorrect data prompts them to issue that sticker without requiring other actions on your part, but that's not your problem......

On inspection requirements: Trailers with a gross weight OVER 4500 pounds require it. That means 4501. If you are exactly 4500, the state doesn't require you to do an inspection.

I believe that trailer inspection and registration is a state level matter. I've never heard of a city having the authority to mandate what is required for operation of a trailer in Texas (other than they could require a permit for parking it inside the city, for instance). When you say "Denton" and mention city, were you possibly in a county tax office that was IN the city of Denton?
