I been looking at thousands of flies on amazon and other places selling flies . I don't have a fly hook chart so hoping maybe someone here can help by telling me the size fly hooks for what fish is best size ? Like in a top water popper for medium size bass what's best hook size and for pan fish what hook size and crappie what hook size ? I got a fly assortment for trout I'm looking at to buy but they are smaller than what I use for medium bass and panfish .

There are no rules.

Big fish will eat small flies, and small fish will try to eat large flies.

You got a 5wt right? Starting out I wouldn't go larger than an 8 until you get experience casting the new rod. Larger flies are more challenging to cast. So, I'd start with easier sizes.

8 a good place to start. As far as clousers go I have caught very small gills 8in and 8 pound bass as well as stripers hybrids gar carp buffalo and goos on a size 6 chartreuse and white. They are stream lined and cast just as well on my three wt. starting out I would also look at buggers from size 12-6 they will catch anything that eats meat. As well as fishing running water for bass some craw patterns. One thing I can't stress enough high quality florocarbon tippet and learn a double surgeons loop to attach. I have quit buying 9 foot leaders and have gone to the 7 1/2 foot leader so I can add the florocarbon that I want. Fishing subsurface it helps get the flys down as it sinks and it is almost invisible under water allowing you to use heavier line then you could with mono

Thanks for the info Rex and Robert. I'll try following those guidelines and when buying flies. My old rod and line was 7/8 wt and I used some fairly small flies but didn't know the hook size.
