Four or five years ago posted a pic of a nice fish and a story about having a fish drag an unattended rod out of the boat in 20 ft. of water. Tried every kind of lure to snag the line but nothing. Next day while fishing the same spot that gave up an 11 and took my rod I snagged someone's line and it was mine so rod retrieved. Couldn't happen again, no this time it was even quirkier.

Fishing again with Dannie Golden a few days ago we where both working a c-rig back to the boat when Dannie hangs what seems to be a nice fish and with rods all over the deck it looked easier for me to lip his fish from mid boat. laid down my rod and lipped a nice 5 to 6 lb. fish for him and then heard him yell and start moving to the back of the boat chasing my rod. The wind was really down so the boat wasn't moving but the rod beat Dannie to the water. We're saying how this couldn't happen twice and having an expensive laugh when a nice fish jumps out of the water about 50 ft. from the boat. He says it's your fish Chet and I'm how do you know? He said he could see line hanging out of his mouth. We trolled to spot he jumped and tried to see if the line was still there and second cast he hangs the line. It was close to the rod because it came up quick. Handed me the rod and then hand lined a fat 6 to the boat.

So it proves two things, it can happen twice and some guys never learn about laying rods down in the middle of a cast. This is the little sucker that Stole my rod.

I don't normally endorse this idea, but I'm starting to think you need to buy a lottery ticket. You should only need one!

Good for you. I have lost three rods and reels over the side of the boat in the last 2-3 years and never got any of them back.

Awesome story! I kind of have a similar story. I am from Minnesota and 2 falls ago my brother and I were fishing Mille Lacs and were on a school of big smallies. My brother set the hook on a fish and it was a good one and the line broke by the reel I think. We cast for quite a while trying to snag the line and never did. Anyway 45 minutes later we were still fishing the same spot and my brother sets the hook again and says its a nice fish but his lure comes in with line attached to it. I said it was his break off and to start hand lining because his fish was probably still on. Wouldn't you know it was and it was big! We finally get it netted and the smallie came in at 5lbs 9oz and was by far his personal best. Pretty awesome way to put a personal best in the boat haha. I always ask him what would have happened if I would have snagged the line...would that have counted as my fish then.

Just happy to be part of Chet's stories. Man we laughed about it several times. Glad we got it back.

Haha. Lucky for sure.

I hooked a 10oz bass once, on a drop shot. The fish flopped off the hook, I tried to grab it. And when I did I kicked a Steez combo overboard. I grabbed one of my Team Lews Pro/Cara combos and tried to dig for it real quick. Lost grip on the Lews/Falcon combo. Then saw that my Steez combo was floating along the side of the boat.

Never was able to retrieve my Lews/Falcon combo.

Also, the little bastage flipped overboard and swam away.

Steez, if you've ever seen a Disney movie, you may have noticed they often have content encoded for adult humor that goes right over the heads of the kids watching the movie. I once saw a Disney movie that had some talking animals that did a secret-agent kind of thing. They had a special secret mission, so they decided to name it.....get this......CLUSTERSTORM! We cracked up! After that, when we saw something really fouled up, we used our new codeword for it. Your story brings to mind that codeword for the other one that seems to fit.

...but sorry you lost the rod overboard - it could have been worse....
