I didn't realize it until today, but I scored a hat trick on Roberts last week. Largemouth, Spot, and Smallmouth. First ever smallmouth that I recall. Woo hoo, off to a much better start this year.

I don't think that top one is a Smallmouth, but may be bad picture.

What makes you think it is not? I didn't catch it the first time since the vertical body stripes were faint. You can barely make them out. What I keyed on was the stripes running across the face by the mouth as well as the shape.

Does everyone think there is some sort of hybridization in the smallie, making it technically a 'meanmouth'?

Friday, it doesn't take away from your hat-trick. It is still appears to be substantially crossed with Smallmouth. Congratulations on three great catches!!!

My measuring technique was a bit off. Measured correctly, probably just a hair over 18".

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm pretty sure it's a smallmouth, but if someone has other proof/info, fire away. It was interesting in that I caught all three in a small area so they were co-mingled. From the looks of their mouths, they were feeding on crawfish.

Few years ago a friend fishing in Media stuck around 5lb Kentucky. It was weighed put in release tank, and some guys fishing the T started questioning whether or not it was real Kentucky.

Long story short, Fish was not counted as since slot back the was 14 to 24, He sent pics to TPWD and after a few back and forth emails, Since at the time it would of been lake record, the biologist at TPWD said they only true way to determine if the fish was a pure breed Kentucky was to do kill fish and send off scale samples.

So the thought is the fish was a hybrid or largemouth/Kentucky.........

You guys blow my mind sometimes. The top fish is absolutely a small mouth. Look at his jaw, his vertical lines, the bronze color, the facial markings, the classic smallie shape, it's a smallie. Plus the guy who caught it says it is and he got a much better look at her than any of us did.

Congrats on the hat trick Joe.

That's what I was thinking. It's obviously a smallmouth.
