I would like to make some Briminator flies and the guy in the video I was watching was using dubbing brush. I Googled dubbing brush and have found out how to make it, which I am not interested in doing; I have searched Bass Pro, Cabela's and Orvis directly and can't find it. There were a couple of sites that sold it, like EP and another place which there website wasn't working, etc.....

Does anyone have a local DFW source for dubbing brush or is there an alternative material that I can get locally?

I just glue a piece of velcro on a piece of dowel. Use the sticky part; works great-p-

FishyB, I've seen that video you are speaking about but have never attempted to purchase the material he is using for the body.

The Briminator is my favorite fly for subsurface pond fishing. On size 10 flies I purchase the rabbit hair dubbing. I use this on size 8 as well, but will also use fine chenille for the body and dub the head.

One of my favorite patterns is to tie the Briminator with crawfish orange rabbit strips. I cut the fur off the strip and use it for both the tail and dubbing the body. For me, crawfish orange, black and olive have worked the best. The more natural, the better, for most situations.

I've probably shown this before but the original briminator uses the one feather for all the parts. The tail is made with half the fluff; the other half of the fluf is used to dub the body and around the eyes, and the end of the feather is palmered around behind the eyes. Course you can make a briminator with whatever materials you want. All of us fly tyers can't resist using other materials, which is why fly tying is very personable-p-

What pearow said. A pheasant skin and the associated feathers will get it done.

Wow guys! Thank you for the great information! I am tying a bunch for Reel Recovery for the participant's gift they receive at the retreats. Figured I would tie up several for myself and son since we will be in mass production mode.

Also, would it make sense to wrap some wire around the shank of the hook to give it a little weight to help it sink. The bead chain eyes wouldn't seem to really add anything to get the fly down.

That's interesting. We had a Reel Recovery presentation at our Brazos Valley fly club meeting last night.

I tie some with light wire around the shank if I need to get them deep into the weeds or fishing in current. I have also used lead eyes. I prefer to use them without weight most of the time. The slower rate of decent makes for a better presentation. Bluegill, in particular, like a very slow presentation in most cases.

One warning about briminator feathers; if you tie on the kitchen table or anywhere the home general tries to keep tidy; the feather fluff is lighter than air and will float indefinately; usually until the home general is setting supper on the table; then it quickly descends into the peas or mash potatoes. They are a mess to deal with, which is why some use alternative materials-p-

Very cool that y'all had a presentation at your club. Don't quote me exactly but we need approximately 768 flies for the boxes this year, so there is a lot of tying that needs to be done! I appreciate the input on the wire as well, great information.

been there; til the General In Charge threatened DEE- vorse; they have a way of getting what they want; and if we want supper regular, we comply, head down; eyes on the shoes!!!!-p-

We are looking at helping in October at the Navasota event which is only 20 minutes away from us. It's a bluegill and bass pond so I'll have plenty of briminators, poppers and froggy flies available to share. I suspect if they posted a thread, our TFF brothers would be glad to donate to this very worthy cause.
