I'm looking into getting my first cast net, but I'm lost at what size and type to get. I understand that in Texas, it must be no more than 14 feet in diameter (7 feet in radius). I'm interested in getting my own bait, instead of wasting money on bait when I could just catch my own. Any suggestions?

3/8" mesh is the size you'd want. Make sure the net had 1 lb of lead weight per foot or more. The more weight it has, the faster is sinks and catches more fish. The more expensive 6 panel design open easier, but they also cost more.

I use a light weight 7 footer ($) in the warm water and a 7 foot heavy net($$$) for cold water season.

Until you figure out how to throw one, start with a smaller net, maybe 5 foot, possibly 6. A 7 foot net does you no good if you can't get it to open up.

If you plan to use your net in the creeks get a cheap one for that.

I use a 6' mono not nylon. Nylon is for salt water or so I hear. I started with a 5' but if I were you I would just get a 6' and practice in the driveway. Just use your hands and forget the gimmicks. I just buy the normal 6 footers and they work fine. I have caught shad in zero to almost 50' with the same net. Learning to throw a cast net for me was almost like blowing a duck call. After some practice it just came to me.

I struggled with cast nets all of my life until I installed this on my net. I've used one on my cast nets ever since. A guy in Austin sells these online. Prokast Perfect Circle Thrower. I think Bass Pro carries them too. Just in case you can't get the hang of it, this is a good option. With this installed in any 6 to 7 foot net, it is EASY to throw. Get a goodmono net. For the money a Bait Buster net is high value. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvbdtR3qLq4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkj5p9fogCI

I recommend going to bass pro and buying an old salt net, then buy the $8 Or whatever it is for gear guard, then if you hang it up or tear it, if you can retrieve just part of it and take it back to bps, they'll replace it.

Never thought about doing that, genius !!!! When I hang my Old Salt's I feel like crying..... Like others said, 6 foot is great to start with but I really like my 7's. The 1 pound of weight per foot makes a huge difference in my opinion and I've got 2 theories on that. First they are more expensive which translates to the higher end nets and these seem to throw and open better, not as many "bad" knots, etc....that seem to hang on the mesh and bring about the dreaded taco. Also in my theory is the heavier weights I get a much better net opening when throwing. Last net I bought wasn't an old salt but did have 1lb per foot and it's been a great net, believe I got it at Cabelas but can't recall the name of it. Funny how much more a 7 footer with 1lb of weight per foot can wear you out.....Oh, I throw from a boat which does make it easier than from the shore, from the shore I prefer a 6 footer.

McKinney Thats what I do a BPS its 14.00 and they replace the net. Keep the receipt and be sure to register when you buy it. I fished Ray Hubbard a lot and cast for shad. Get them hung up a lot. They want you to bring something back even if its just some rope.

I just wish BPS carried some decent nets and I would take them up on that gear guard. Most of the time they have 6 and 8' nets with 3/4# per foot...or 1" mesh...useless.

Unlike a lot of that snake oil stuff out there these Perfect Circle Thrower things really do work well. Even a girl can do it with these things attached. Easy to install. I did it by myself but it would be easier with two people just like the destructions say. The only other advice is when you are installing one be sure to count and recount and double check everything because getting one back apart might be impossible without ruining something. If you have never thrown a cast net one of these will shorten the learning curve by 10 fold.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth."
Then He made the earth round...and He laughed and laughed and laughed!
