Lately I've been feeling the itch to follow my dream and work with fishing and hunting gear. I currently make duck calls as a side job and have reall been looking into making my own baits and poles. Does anybody do that stuff full time?

I would like to quit my job and do that stuff full time. But wouldn't we all.... My duck call business is picking up, I also sell outdoor type shirts and caps which have been semi successful, I think adding baits and rods could keep me pretty busy. But I just don't know if there is enough money to be made in it(to support a family) unless you get in a big box store...

I don't really have a family yet, I'm just married and we both bring in a good income. But I figure now is the time to make sacrifices and to start a business before we have kids. My father inlaw wants to get a booth at canton trade days to sell pottery he makes(that's his retirement dream) and said we could share a booth selling our stuff. I think that would be a good test market try.

But I just wanted to hear from you experienced guys.

My dad had a tackle shop back in the day in a small town and it made around $25K year. But we also sold minnows (awesome mark up on those). He made rods, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc.. just no plastic. I have at least 50 different lead molds and still make all of my own stuff and for a few other guys as well. It's a hobby for me.

Good luck!

Thanks! My father inlaw has a kiln so I can make molds and I have designs for plastics. I think between duck calls, rods, and baits I could keep myself pretty busy. I just don't know how much that stuff brings home to the dinner table.
