I didn't get the call for a job this morning, so I hitched up the boat and headed for the lake. It was a bit chilly this morning, and I hadn't been out very long before the wind gusts started reaching almost 40 mph. I probably should have stayed at home, or at least headed back home as soon as I saw how bad the wind would be on the water. But some days, hardheadedness sets in, and you just keep fishing. I was wishing I had some shallow fish in a protected cove somewhere, but I didn't, so I just headed for the few good spots I knew of that I thought I might be able to fish.

Water temps were 51 degrees where I was. The first couple of spots I tried, I just couldn't hold the boat well enough to fish efficiently at all. Finally, at my third spot, I thought I could at least hold well enough to fish, although every time one of those big gusts came, it sent me scooting across the water. But, when I could hold the boat still enough to get jigs straight down, I got bit. When I quit fishing at 4:15 and headed for the ramp, I had caught 27 keepers. Bouncing on the waves coming in, I couldn't believe I stayed on the water that many hours, and caught that many fish. Sometimes, things go your way.

The fish were 12 to 13 feet deep, in 13 to 20 feet of water. Some were holding a dropoff; some were just in the open water, under a school of shad. My purple/chartreuse plastic shad were the best bait of the day. Some fish bit the smaller 1/24 oz jig, but the bigger 1/8 oz jig caught more. I cleaned four of the really nice fish, and released the rest.

As I type this, I still feel like I'm bouncing on the water. I think I'm going to wait for a calm day before I go out again.

Bud: I live on the lake and I saw how rough it was today. I hope you were in your shrimp trawler, and not a small boat!

Glad to hear that you had a good day fishing and made it back safely!

Here lately I've been trout fishing during lunch time at one of the lakes that TPWD stocked for the Winter season and today it was too rough to bank fish! Winds were just crazy today, couldn't imagine how it would've been on the lake.

I'm probably not the best one to ask about that. I've only lived here a couple of years and am still learning the lake. The lower half of the lake does seem to be more popular with crappie anglers, though.

Purple/chartreuse is what I've been calling my homemade plastic shad color that has been doing so well lately, but it's not really purple. It's something between blue and purple. I found this color thesaurus, and checked it to see what color that really is. By that page's charts, it is indigo. So, that's what I'm calling this color from now on: indigo/chartreuse.
