Is there a reason why the spool may get stuck inside the reel? I recently acquired this reel which has been working great but I noticed this issue when I attempted to replace the stock bearings with Boca's. The spool would not pop out on it's own. I had to unscrew the tension cap and kinda push on the spool shaft in order to release it. Any reason for this?

Only contact point should be the shaft through the bearing. Check the shaft for straightness. Check for the shaft binding in the bearing. If shaft is just binding in the bearing, cleaning should fix.

Thank you for the response...not familiar with what you mean by binding in the bearing. Do you mean rubbing, contact? Or are you referring to corrosion?

is the reel very dirty? Any dirt around the spool that may hinder it being released? Also and overfilled spool will have trouble coming out because too much line wont aloow the spool to come out of the reel. Corrosion or a bent spool shaft could be other casues. But I have had reels so dirty I could barely get the side plate and spool out of them.

Just opened it up and reel was not dirty. I'm not sure but I think I might have figured out why it won't pop out. Under the tension cap there is a small half moon looking clip in between the 2 washers. This clip appears to be bent in a way where it makes contact with the spool shaft. That seems to be the only area of contact. But I'm not 100% on that.

Hmmm yeah I know which clip you are talking about but it shouldnt be holding the spool in. Even if it was bent weird the shaft should slide out. Only thing I can think of is maybe the spool pin is bent somehow or seized up in the pinion gear? Not much else that could be holding it on.

Humm you bring up a good point about the spool pin. I didn't think about that. I will take a look. May have to send this off to a reel tech. It seems to operate perfectly fine. No unusual sounds or grinding. Haven't fished it since changing bearings but getting over 30seconds of free spool time, and casting with a plug in the yard seems improved. But in the back of my mind I can't fish it confidently knowing about this issue.

If you can pop it back out again the way you did the first time I would inspect the spool pin again. Should be able to eyeball to see if it is bent. Ill bet that it is and most likely from someone trying to remove it without the proper tool.

Thanks for your help Nathan! The issue was definitely with the spool pin. It wasn't bent but it also wasn't re-installed properly by the previous owner. Once I had it lined up properly that solved the issue.
