Fly tying is all about discovering what works better and to that end I made a few tweaks to the latest design of my whitebass & crappie fly.

A simple streamer/clouser-like fly good for the beginner or advanced tier alike. Comprised of gray & white buck-tail deer hair, silver bead chain, spinner bait skirt and chartreuse thread on about a #8 hook you will find this fly is easy to tie and fish.

The springtime crappie and whitebass will be moving into a creek near you and catching them on a fly you tied yourself is about the most rewarding way to fish and the most fun you can have with your clothes on wink

Always enjoy and look forward to your videos. I haven't had a chance to watch this one, but when I get home tonight, I surely will.

I scampered out to the Lake Somerville spillway early Wednesday morning before work to test my latest creations from the vice.. What a beautiful morning to find that my new fly design works great! Only fished for about one hour but that was just long enough to satisfy my curiosity about the fly and the fishing below the dam..

I've had good results with this new version so I tied up a baker's dozen for a co-worker heading to Colorado Bend next week..

I got to watch Yakin' up the Thump and Fishing with my Boys last night. I enjoyed the trip up the creek, especially when you dragged your Kayak across the area to catch up! I told you this before, but I really enjoy your videos. I sometimes wish they were longer. I'll have to try tying the fly you posted above.

How'd you do with the hybrids? Sure looks like it was a nice day to fish. I'm stuck at work

Whenever possible the whitebass in Lake Somerville begin moving into the creeks earlier than most any other lake in the state. The main feeder creek is the Yegua and when there is water enough there will be whitebass and crappie moving up the creek as early as November. By late December the Yegua is pretty well loaded with the two favored eating fish.

The actual spawning of the whitebass usually takes place in mid March but the whitebass seem to wait for a good rise in the creek while holding downstream in the deeper pools. Same goes for all the creeks that feed Lake Somerville but the other creeks have very limited watersheds (with the exception of Nails creek) so often do not have enough flowing water in them to draw up the whitebass.

A unique set of circumstances have to occur first for this little sandy creek to have spawning whitebass in it and it begins with the presence of water, flowing water and a good amount at just the right time of year.

This situation simply doesn't last long and often ends in a minor fish-kill. As the creek and lake drop back to normal levels these fish get trapped in shallow pools waiting on another flush of flood water to take them back to the lake... This is Texas and rain when you need it, in the amount you need it, is not likely to fall..

I just started your last video a few minutes ago. The wife got home and wanted to go eat. I had just made it to the point where you found your phone.

My last day off from work is spent just like the prior four with friends fishing the creeks of Lake Somerville. Fly fishing for whitebass is a real hoot when the fish are plentiful and hungry!

Ben,
Y'all gave them those White's a whipping. My wife watched along with me and she nearly jumped out of her chair. She loves fishing too.
