Some of you boat gurus....this just recently started....I can be running 40 mph, 3/4 trim and when I make a sharp turn I feel a thumping back around the engine. Got any ideas? I've checked all the mounting bolts on the engine and jack plate for tightness. This only happens in a tight turn. I do have a piece of the skeg missing but our local prop pro says that shouldn't be causing it. The shaft shows to be true and the prop bushing is good. This is a 18ft. Phoenix with a 150 SHO. Thanks for any info you can offer.

Do you have Power Poles or Talons that could catch water in the turn?

Have you ever discovered your fishing buddy missing right at that moment?

Cavitation and harmonics can make some pretty weird noises and can resonate away from where it is actually occurring, are you sure its coming from the back of the boat? Check all of your compartments to make sure everything is buttoned down properly and not shifting enough to bump the inside of the hull in a 40 mph turn. Lastly, I'm no prop guru by any means but I have been around long enough to ride in a number of rigs that had skeg damage of varying degree, some had little to no effect while others had significant performance issues. If this noise your hearing did not occur before the incident with the skeg I'd start there, you probably need to address that anyway.

No power poles and my buddy noticed the bumping too. You can feel it. The skeg's been damaged awhile and this has just started recently. I need to carry the boat in for service soon and I'll get the dealer to take it for a spin as it's still under warranty. I just thought maybe someone here has run into this before. I've just probably overlooked something simple.

I'm going to say check your lower unit. I've had 2 go out on me and both times the only sign was in a turn you could hear a knock. Never going straight. Could be something going wrong down there

Pull the drain plug in the LU and check for shavings. If there isn't any, keep rocking until you get a chance to take it in. Boats have warranty and insurance for a reason.

Sounds like cavitation to me too. By the description anyway. Could also be unsecured trolling motor cables running from back to front in the boat hull just banging round a little.
