My 17 1/2' rig w/90HP Johnson does not exactly get up and on plane as fast as I would like Do these 'add on' fins that attach to the motor really help or just a 'gimmick' ?? Thanks in advance God Bless Lee

I have one. It works, but damn is it goofy looking. It does help though. It also helps keep the boat bow up when trimming up the boat to deal with rougher water without causing excessive porpoising (sp).
Put it this way. I broke mine in a tourney backed into a stump. I immidiately noticed it. I took off the part that was still attached that afternoon. Next day went out on the water. Third day, bought another one. That much difference for my boat/motor combo.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Most of the time the foils are bandaids for a bad setup. What exactly are you running? Hull, motor, prop.. What exactly are your current results? Top speed, rpms, and exactly how slow is your holeshot?

Look into venting the prop if it's a 2 stroke.
If the fish don't bite your not baiting right...

Lee, You can't give us a guess at a prop. You need to know exactly what you have (including the model name such as "Raker" etc.). We also need to know what the prop shop did to it. I can't run a 27 on my 201 with a 200, so I serious doubt a 27 is right for your boat, if that's what's on there. That's why you are only turning 5000 rpm. What is the max. for your outboard? You need to know this and set the prop so that you get right up against the limit. The prop will be stamped inside the hub at the front - if you don't have the box. We also need to know the engine height relationship between propshaft and the bottom of the pad. There are diagrams showing how to measure this. Pat Golf is your chance to sort our what the boat's issue is. Do you have one or two Talons? 8 ft.? Has anyone in another boat confirmed you aren't dragging a Talon during hole shot?

Ok pards. You need at least a 3" smaller prop. Which will put your rpms where you need them and your holeshot will be dramatically better. That's proper setup.
Look at your prop again it's not a 27.

I believe it is stamped on the prop, I'll look. I don't recall seeing a mfg name on it...but again, I'll look No sir, have one 12' Talon....LOL, if it were not for the danged ladder, I would have bought and installed two but, I had to make a decision. The ladder won I'd like to know I can get back in the boat if I ever were to fall in the danged water. Here's a picture Finally after being on the danged phone with Apple, learned how to adjust the size on the photos. Lord, something so simple in Windows is kinda hard in an iMAC Thanks.... UPDATE: On the prop is #394758 / 13 1/2 x 18 (looking it up on internet - Raker family / Stainless steel/ 3 blade/ standard rotation and Pitch is 18") Now, if memory serves me, B&B resized the pitch to 17" and enlarged the vent hole, Raker - Johnson/Evinrude/OMC
rpms: ah, about 5,000 wide open....boat will top out at about 44 mph according to my Hummingbird How slow: ? ah well, takes sometimes 2 to 4 minutes to get on plane...
Ok, sorry about not having ALL the right information. It is now up to date.... Opinions ????
God Bless Lee

Thanks for the detailed info. Let's wait for Pat to drop by again since replacing the engine is not where you wanted to go!
