I have an 898 currently and I would like to upgrade to a helix 12. Is it possible to just get the helix 12 sonar gps unit and share the si data from my 898. I saw confirmation that you can do this with a helix si unit to a helix non si unit. This would save me a ton of money if its possible.

It "should" work, but the actuality of sharing with a non-SI model of the XX9 series has been sporatic.

The XX9 and Helix series have the cross-technology sharing.

I am considering doing the same thing. Wayne, if I put the 898 on the bow and the helix 12 on the contour, will they share waypoints? Also, would I need to move the gps puck to the bow now since that's where the 898 will go?

Yes, you can share waypoints with a Helix, ONIX, or any other Ethernet capable unit--older or current. The Helix will need an Ethernet adapter AS EC QDE for the Ethernet cable connection. The 898 already has a threaded Ethernet port on the center of the back of the unit. You would need the current software for the 898 to talk to newer units.

Good question about the GPS antenna. If you create a waypoint based on a sonar return, you would want a GPS antenna where the transducer is. Otherwise you would have created a position error that is the distance between antenna and transducer.
A GPS antenna at the transom for the Helix on the console would be a good idea also to eliminate that distance error.

Thanks for the info brother. Since the Helix 9 has an internal gps, I would think that I should move the puck to the bow. So basically I could only use the front graph to scan and share waypoints then send to the back Helix graph

You can create waypoints with either unit. Just the ones created at the console will have a position error that is the distance between the display and transom transducer unless you add an external GPS antenna at the transom for the Helix.
You may or may not find that error objectionable.

Gotcha. So even with the internal GPS in the Helix at the console, I need to still add a external puck at the transom? I already have a puck there for my 898 so should I just use that puck for the Helix then put an additional puck on the bow for the 898?

IF you want the highest degree of waypoint accuracy, that is the way to go.

PLUS if you have paid attention to how Humminbird handles positioning when sitting still or moving less than .6 mph, the position icon turns into a Zero (known as the doughnut). It does that because GPS cannot determine direction unless there are consecutive track points within a certain amount of time. Other brands just have the position curser wandering around on the map view.

The best fix for that is the AS GPS HS antenna which has a compass and will indicate on the map what direction the bow is pointed. Very handy for positioning on offshore waypoints like brush piles, etc. while fishing. Get that antenna and put it at the bow where it gives you the best benefit. Set the Chart Orientation to Head Up.

Lowrance's version is called Point 1.

I just wanted to see if anyone has tested this? I read this post on walleye central and it made me nervous about purchasing a Helix sonar/gps unit to and getting the SI from my 898.

Quote:
The 898 is probably to old to share SI/DI data to a 2D (newer) unit.
I tried a 998 & 859 and it was ugly.
One view showed the "SI" in 2D colors and there were no menus or adjustments. I would say the only safe way is SI to SO, like I have my stuff rigged.
