Yes, crawfish work well. I learned to use them from a couple fine fellows who were slaying the reds and drum on the pier in Caminada Pass (Grand Isle).

I actually won the "other fish" category in the 2014 Salty Cajun tournament (Lake Charles) with a 30.5 lb black drum caught on a crawfish. We managed to catch some crabs the day before, but I was letting my boys fish with the limited crabs while I fished the crawfish. I also caught a big sheepshead on a crawfish.

Another trick for big black drum: order some strong little magnets and attach them to your hooks. The magnetic fields actually attract black drum and will increase your catch rates. See our published paper on it:

http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1511/1511.09302.pdf

We got our magnets at K&J Magnetics.
