I'm looking for some recommendations for a family kayak getaway. Dates look like 2/12 - 2/15 and I was thinking about kayaking the bays down around Port Arthur.

Any thoughts would be great. Currently searching for places on VRBO. New location recommendations are also welcome.

Do you have your own boats or are you renting? Are you planning on going fishing, birding or just paddling?

bert I have three yaks: Hobie PA12, Hobie Outback, Hobie Lanai. Looking to do some fishing if possible. Was thinking of a bay or something that everyone can enjoy. Some hand holding needed since I've never been kayaking in this area before. I've fished the piers and party boats many times.

Sabine lake is there so you have plenty of salty water to fish on. I would say hit up the Texas Kayak Fisherman forum or the Austin kayak fishing forums for the Houston area and see if you can find some people to hook up with. I know there are some kayak fishing guides down around Houston you might go out with to figure out the pattern. Also you can go to the Austin Canoe and Kayak web site for an online kayak launch map of the area.

I've only fished there in the summer time, but Keith Lake is nice little fishery off of Sabine Lake. Bessie Heights Marsh is also nice paddle and fishery as well. Be careful about the gators, there are tons of 4-5 footers and the largest I saw was easily over 12ft. Also, most of the bottoms (especially Bessie Heights) is extremely soft mud, so stay in your kayak.

I'm not interested in tangling with any gators. Thanks for the options much appreciated.
