This may sound kind of silly but before i get in my Kayak id like to take a class or some instruction. Im an avid canoer but am told kayaking is different. ive got plenty of access to shallow ponds ive got a PFD that feels comfortable. id like to learn re entry etc. im going to be smart with kayaking not gonna just run and jump to the ocean but get the fundamentals down. ive read through this forumn many times watched every video i can find but i feel i want to take a class or meet with an experienced kayaker. i have no problem paying for instruction. thanks you all in advance i feel its better safe then sorry

Not sure of any classes in your area but I am sure Houston has some. My advice would be to go to a small pond or even a pool and just practice without any gear in the boat.

Do you have a SIT or SOT?

Nothing out near you that I am aware of, I paddled canoes for years then switched without a hitch. In my experience reentry for kayaks is much easier than canoes.

I know there are some paddling trails on rivers connected to big sam and there are marinas on the lake and Toledo Bend that rent kayaks, you may be able to find some groups to paddle or train with there. Houston, Dallas and Austin are the only places that I am sure have kayaking instructors and courses.

I did check the ACA kayak instructor list and found one in Livingston you might contact as well and see if they are doing local classes. There are lots of them along the coast that will work with you on surf tactics as well.

I have been kayaking quite a while...I live in Fort Worth...but I will be in Kingtown this coming weekend to do some fishing on the burn. I wouldn't mind going out with you at all. I won't be hitting Livingston just Rayburn. So if you want to come on out let me know.

I'd probably take a class if there was one around the Lufkin/Livingston area myself.

I would recommend that you devote a Saturday or Sunday and drive up to Dallas and attend one of Steve Wall's classes. Steve is ACA highly certified and actually trains both private and commercial instructors. Besides his hands on knowledge and skill, Steve also possesses the talent of excellent communication to his students. His website and contact information is below:

One of Steve's classes would be well worth your time.
