Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Barbara Baker and her son, Robert, from Ohio decided to charter the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. Winds were out of the west northwest at 15 mph, temperatures in the mid 70’s. As the Bakers boarded the boat, Robert inquired about doing some shark fishing so I planned on doing some shark fishing later on the trip.

On our way out we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait located in the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes later lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started out trolling with two #8 plainers, one with a pink and white sea witch and the other with a pink and blue sea witch, both had double hooked Bonito strips. For surface baits we went with four Ballyhoos. Our first catch was a Kingfish on the plainer rod followed by another Kingfish, a couple of Bonitos and a Barracuda.

From there we headed out to “shark land” which is an area south of Fort Lauderdale in 350 ft of water. We put out three shark baits, one on the surface, one midrange and one on the bottom, as well as one kite with two live Goggle Eyes. Dorsal fin on the short kite bait as the Shark grabbed the live Goggle Eye and then pulled the hook. We reset the kite and a few minutes later another dorsal fin appeared on the long kite bait. This time it belonged to a Sailfish!!!! The Sailfish circled the bait and attacked the live Goggle Eye. Hooked up!!! – as Robert jumped into the fighting char to do battle. The Sailfish put a great show doing his acrobats. Twenty-five minutes later the Sailfish was wired to the side of the boat by our mate, David. Pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

It was time to head back to the dock. No Shark but Robert was pleased with his catch of the Sailfish. The anglers retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the Bahia Mar Dock, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
