Dropped my boat off at the shop last week to have the motor checked out because it seemed like the top end had kinda faded away, turns out my #6 cylinder has about half the compression the rest of the motor does. Taking to my mechanic I told him I thought it was just a prop issue from when I hit something but that I had tried a few and no real big change. I told him I couldn't afford a power head right now and said if he would put it back together I'd come pick it up. He suggested talking to my insurance, that if I hit something it could have jarred things enough to mess up that cylinder. Anyway has anyone ever tried to claim insurance for something like that? Seems like a long shot, but I can afford my deductible, can't afford a power head.

Not being able to afford the powerhead doesn't make it right if there really isn't any expectation that one caused the other, and I would think that's a REAL long tale to follow. Comes to mind: why would only 1 cylinder at the top be affected?

Loss policies are not mechanical failure policies....you should have also been carrying an extended service plan on the motor if you wanted such protection.

All you can do is ask. I had a lady tbone my truck. She ran a redlight. My heater core sprang a leak. Insurance said it wasn't covered, because she hit me in the side. Took a long time and a lot of talking, but finally got it fixed. Proving that hitting a stump messed up your rings or valves is definitely a long shot.

Not an insurance issue for one cylinder down. They will deny the claim.

Have the one cylinder repaired. It can be done without a complete overhaul of the powerhead. Not the best, but it will get you back on the water so you can save the money for a proper powerhead rebuild.
