So I've never caught any crappie, but I want to change that. Are there any fishing barges in the dfw area worth fishing? What kinds of jigs or bait should I use?

I can vouch for the barge at Weatherford in the early Spring. Fish just outside of the barge, under the barge walkway, and also, try the small cove to the right of the barge walkway as you're walking toward the barge.
March would be a good time to start trying out these areas.
Go buy some size 1/8 or 1/16 Roadrunner (horse head) type jigs, with a white and/or chartreuse jig body. Crappie Thunder or Mirabou styles should work.
Chartreuse Crappie Nibbles can help.
I've also seen folks pull crappie out of the Camp Wisdom pier area using Roadrunners.

This winter has been really tough out there in weatherford. I've only seen one good night. Every other time I've been there has been utterly terrible. I used jigs and live minnows with not that much action.

These were from Weatherford about a week ago, had 7 others to go with them. Caught them from 7am to 9am. 1/32oz black jighead with a small Thermocline bait. But overall the fishing has been pretty slow compared to previous years. It will get good on the rocks this spring, always does...

It couldn't hurt getting some small or medium minnows and using either a drop shot or split shot rig with a # 2 hook, or just on a jig head to try while you're getting used to jig fishing. Years ago when I got into crappie fishing I tried exclusively with jigs at first and it was frustrating learning. Using minnows helped me on a lot of occasions and kept my interest up.

Lived in Weatherford for 16 years. It was always a hit and miss for me at the house. When the temps are bone-cold it was worth going to (Shad stacked up in the protected cove where the house is).-- I remember one day when the shad were so thick that everyone jigging caught at least 2-3 shad snagging on accident and some big ones in the mouth!-- One time a fellow asked if he could throw his cast net inside and it was slow so we said yes... Well, Im not lying when I say that he had to get help to lift it! Bet he had 80 lbs. of shad in that net in one cast! If you are going cause you have nothing better to do then go. I could faithfully catch catfish there using cut shad. Most days was 1-4 crappie -- Long days 4-6 hours. Winter=Bone Cold= Decent fishing early morning. Blue/white combo or blue/chartruese used to be good. If you can get out on a boat and find structure there are some quality fish in the lake. When Brazos was generating and shad year classes were more we experienced better fishing/better quality fish. I don't know if they are generating at all. Last I heard it was maintenance flow. I could be wrong. Caught many a fish in the outflow during the winter.
Who knows? You may get lucky like Plano Paul there and pull a mess out every once and a while.

One thing's for sure, I won't have to look very far for a fishing buddy in a few years Please do consider submitting the picture. Not often the crappie section knocks an inadvertent homer like you just did. Who knows, ya might score one for the home team? It's great to see young'uns involved. My daughter was asking about different organs of fish tonight when we were cleaning them and always helps me hold the bag when I rinse fillets. She told me tonight, "I don't mind if I get messy, it's not gross, it's healthy, yummy food and I think the meat is pretty." Glad ya shared.
