I bought me a vice last night. After looking at some of the cheaper ones at Bass Pro I decided on a Apex for $115. This one looked better to me than the cheap ones and has a lifetime warranty. Did I do ok?

Can I use regular sowing thread for tying? I bought the stuff to make some olive, pink and white near deers but forgot white thread and they were out of white powder paint [but for $8 on the paint I don't mind]

I have used the same Apex vice for almost 2 years now, Works great for the small midges I was tying up in Colorado. And equally well for the #4 Clousers since I have been back in TX.

I have not tried using sewing thread, imagine it would work.

There are a few patterns that use specific sewing thread, but I imagine in a pinch you could use it. The patterns that use it, make a ribbed look or segmented.

Get some white fingernail polish for a buck, and a jar of Sally Hansen for top coat. I use this on everything.

Sewing thread is usually too thick in diameter (measured in deniers) for most flies. I sometimes use Coats & Clark sewing threads for the bodies of nymphs, but find that sticking with threads designed specifically for tying work best. Here's a link to a thread on another site that provides good background on tying threads:

I've been using a cheap gorilla vice for 12-15 years. Its a regal clone made in china but has held up well. I'm a very cheap individual; all who know me will attest-p-

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead a placed a order with Cabelas because my dumb butt forgot the pink thread also. I had to get the pink in a "70" and the white and olive in 6/0 whatever that means.

I should be set for plenty of Near Deers. White, Pink and Green Pumpkin powder paint. White, Pink and Olive chenille, marabou and thread with 3 packs of unpainted 1/80 jig hooks. And the midge flash

get some permanent markers at the dollar store; use whatever color thread you have, then paint it the color you want. I get all my wife's old bottles of nail polish and use that to color the thread. I've got umpteen shades of red and pink and also white, black, and other weird colors like neon blue and green; stuff she throws away will last a long time painting fly heads-p-

The nail polish with glitter looks really good. I got some green with glitter (looks like a fancy car color) and a couple others that really get used a lot. I bet I look weird roaming the nail polish isles at Walgreens. smile
