Hey guys!! So they stock little ponds in Texas with Rainbow Trout-- I've heard about power bait/power eggs, and what hooks to use, etc-- but what about rooster tails, mepps/panther martin spinnners, and kastmaster spoons? What size do you think I should use for these smaller 1 ft ish stocked trout? 1/4 oz? 1/8 oz?

Thanks laugh

1/16th or 1/8th ounce.

Also try a small jig head, 1/16th or 1/8th with a 2" black curl tail grub.

Size 5 Rapala lures also work quite well. Silver and black. The countdown series is my favorite.

Living in the Pacific northwest I did a lot of trout fishing. Lakes the grub/jig combo and Rapala were my goto lures.

Streams, 1/16 or 1/8 ounce Roostertail in the Skunk color.

If you're going to throw spinners switch the treble hook out for a size 10 or 8 siwash hook. http://www.sportco.com/store/pc/Gamakatsu-Siwash-Open-Eye-Hook-Nickel-Red-Size-10-8-0-771p66469.htm

If I were going to fish the Rapala lures now I would also switch treble hooks out for the Owner single hook replacements. Get the size 6. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Single_Replacement_Hook_X_Strong/descpage-OSRH.html

I've had good luck with #0 and #1 Mepps and the 1/16 and 1/8 once rooster Tails. Went out Friday afternoon and hooked 9 or 10 Rainbow Trout, landed 4. I really need to get a net I can hook on to my waders.

I bought everything suggested!! When using 3/8 egg weight to swivel, what size swivel is appropriate? Size 12 is what is given in Shakespear's trout combo-- I use size 7 swivels when catfishing, should I use these 12 sized ones for trout with my 6lb test?

I also bought size 1 of the rapala, forgot you said size 5-- was going off how small the mepps/rooster tails are-- woopsie-- also i see the 1/8 oz countdown lures on amazon and they have 2 trebles, while this one has only 1--

That might be a 3. Didn't have them that small back when I was trout fishing.

Just checked. That's a size 1.

Should I keep it, or return and up the size, ya think? pricey lure, this one :P These trout shouldn't be more than a foot long, but I am not 100% -- Bullfrog Pond in Austin, TX-- they stock it-

Mash the barbs on the hooks down, it will make your life much easier. These are my go-to colors for trout. Go with 1/8 or 1/16 oz. Fish them slowly. Trout have excellent vision and can be very finicky.

Do you swivel, or direct tie? I hear about line twisting hell smirk

I go minimalist and tie directly on, I figure the less for the trout to see the better. I also use forceps to get the hook out, those trout have small mouths. 4 lb line for a pond, nothing more than 6 lb line.

It turns out that bass have also learned that trout are very tasty. They are the primary reason some bass in California get as large as they are - they are in lakes routinely stocked with (dumb) hatchery trout that make an easy/nutritious meal. A 5 pound bass will eat an 8 inch trout. Ten+ pound bass think nothing of a 10+ inch bait - be it trout or shiner, etc.
