in a word COLD! 6:30am launch temp 30* water temp 47* calm winds water very muddy
first trip to this lake. first impression is that it would be a decent lake later in the year, but there doesn't look to be any live vegetation like duckweed, eelgrass, hydrilla, lillypads etc even when warmer although I could be wrong. lots of stumps and several humps and other places for fish to hold. One really odd thing...the dam is dirt. no rip rap. anyway on to the report - there is nothing to report. I got two bumps and one I'm not even sure was a bump. I tossed jigs in mardi gras, motor oil, watermelon/red, black/blue. i fished them slow crawl, jigged, dead stick without luck. I tossed a chatter bait with a brass plate in those same colors in the same areas in the same manner with the same results. my fishing partners fished from another boat and tossed white, red, watermelon, chartreuse, and didn't fare any better.
all in all, I'd like to visit this lake again mid march, but its definitely not a winter time lake! also it's a pretty shallow lake.
I didn't lose him at the boat. I shook him off cause I didn't want my hands to get "fishy"

Try late February. If you stayed on the main body of water that's why you got skunked. Aquilla creek and hackberry are the tribs and you can catch if you go up them some.

appreciate the tip. i expected the fish to be on main lake points and drops due to the early time of year and water temp. also got a tip to fish around snake island. will head up creeks for sure next time!

Tell me when and I might show you where you can walk Aquilla creek to the lake. Channel is fairly wide with holes, but I doubt you can get anything bigger than a canoe or kayak in because of the depth.

Went today for 4 hours, zeroed. I did see an 8 point buck and a doe on the Island, that was pretty cool.

I've only fished it once, but did well. It was late spring (maybe May?) with a good breeze. Caught them all early on a square bill very shallow.

Actually used to be full of vegetation including some good hydrillia. I was told the lake was not sprayed for the grass but it disappeared due to a couple low spells. I understand how that kills grass but ALL of it? I do know it is gone which I believe is the biggest reason for decline of the lake.

My house is right by the ramp and the last few years have been tough with low levels, but I really wish they would just stock the lake a little more often and it would really help.

The lake levels have fluctuated drastically over the last 2 yrs. In may of 2014 it was 5 ft. low. In may of 2015 it was 12 ft. high and everywhere in between. Kind of hard for grass to grow in these conditions.

I'm over at the old race track neighbor. 2415 south to be precise. I'm hoping to spend some time at the iron bridge either Saturday or Sunday between 11 and 3 one of those days. Depends on what happens with the goats though.
