Any of you guys had success using crankbaits to catch crappie? Specifically curious about using them for slow trolling. Thinking you would need some kind of weight to get the crankbait to the correct depth.......

I tried it once while drift fishing. Not sure I rigged it right but I tied a 3-way swivel to the end of my main line, a 1oz bank weight with about a 10-12" leader to one leg of the swivel, and a 18" leader with crankbait to the other. Best I remember, the wind was blowing 5-10mph. I caught a few but did much better with jigs and minnows.

It's best done in the spring right after the spawn when they are hungry. Best luck I've had was using Bandit 200 in Chartreuse. I also find that I get a few in the late evening when they come out to feed. Water temp needs to be close to 70 for crankbaits to work well.

Got these last week in April at Texoma.

best bait for crappie is shiners. You don't have to worry about color or water temp.

Check out Wallys website.
He makes a great crank bait.

Wes and I have had pretty good luck trolling cranks. Not done it enough to do it during a tournament, but we are getting close.

We troll Bandit 200 and 300 as well as the Flick-R-Shads in a size 7 (I believe). No weights, just vary the amount of line you have out, and the speed of your boat to determine depth.

We troll about 1.2 - 1.6 and use Okuma line-counter reels. 4 rods out each side of the boat in 8', 10', 12', and 14' lengths.

Most of our trolling is from May - September.
