Depends on the year model. If the HPDI is pre series 2, go with the Mercury.
If it is a series 2, pick your favorite. The 1st gen HPDI's are mediocre and many techs have stopped working on them because of issues that linger after a repair.

I am a Yamaha guy, came from one and still run one so it pains me to bad mouth the gen 1 HPDI, BUT.

Does anyone know what year Yamaha switched from Gen1 to Gen2 on the HPDI's?

My boat was a 2007 with a gen1. I have also seen 2007 models with series 2. So I'm thinking late 07 into 08

I have a HPDI and have not had the first problem with it. I have been satisfied with mine. Mine is a 2007 model with over 350 hours on it. I guess buy what your gut tells you. I think they are both good motors.

From what I understand Gen 2 HPDI didn't necessarily fix much. Those motors are apt to blow the #2 cylinder if they set long without being run. A high hour HPDI is a good motor if it has regular maintenance and filter changes. Even the "mystery" filter. All direct injection motors need to be run and not setup. Give me a 5 year old HPDI with 400 hours over a 5 year old with 75 hours any day.

Every single person that I personally know that has owned a 225 or 250 Yamaha HPDI has had one or more power head failures. With that said, I am sure there is someone that I have met has had better luck but with regards to close friends, co-workers and family and such - everyone one of them have been boatless and/or out a big chuck of change while getting power head replacements for HPDIs.

Not worth trying to comment on something as bias as brand loyalty. But if you're buying an used outboard engine old enough to be a hpdi. Plain on problems. It's a motor on a boat. Majority of the time it's ran hard or idled.
