Has anyone caught a flathead when the water temp. is below 50 degrees?
I tried this week without success.

You hear about them being caught every year in the winter. From what I have noticed it is usually crappie fisherman who luck into them. Like Rick said, it is time to focus on the blues right now!
Thanks, Olen

Never caught one in winter, but then again never really targeted them. I Read something on infersherman many years ago about slaying flatheads in wintering holes on big rivers using cut bait, I haven't tried it myself, I'm sure it can be done, but like the guys above said the blue cat fishing is great so why bother with flatheads.

What about in april? Would it still be too cold to start targeting them with high success?

April is a good month to target the flatheads along with March. I've caught some nice flatheads in this time frame.
If you want winter flatheads, target brush piles in the lake where the river or creek channels are. Any type of structure they can hide in deep water. Rocks area also good structure for them. I've caught them in anywhere from 8ft of water to over 20ft of water. The best bait is perch that are about dead. They move slower and that is what those big flatheads want. Something easy to eat. Fresh cut bait is another good bait. If you find structure, you find flatheads. If you are fishing a river or creek, find a deep hole with structure in them. Also on the deep curves of a river, look at the bank and see if they have undercuts. The flathead is looking for a place with easy bait that's there for the ready. Like posted, most are caught by crappie fishermen in the winter. Those brush piles area a diner to those cats. I have also caught some really nice blues off those crappie brush piles also. Good luck and have a blessed fishing trip.

Like what Yegua Cat said...just want to add that if you can figure out most likely paths flatheads would take to those structures i.e brush piles and those that hold shad in winter might increase your chances of catching flatheads as well as blues. just my

Why do I go fishing? To catch a box of fish and/or some quality time under the sun. Thank Heaven I never fail fishing in Texas, catching box fish or plenty of sunburn.

I've caught a few in the winter up here in Kansas. I think the coldest was 44 degrees on the kansas river in december. The biggest one we got was right 55# we were using cut Asian carp. That same trip we landed 2 blues my pb of 56 and another that went 53. I prefer to use cut bait for all species of cats in the winter including flathead. Cuz it seems they use their sense of smell more in the winter than their sense of vibrations...
