Where does the fuel gauge get it's power from? I checked the ignition power wire at the fuel gauge and no power. I am getting power to the light wire at the gauge. Is there a fuse in the circuit? Trying to find it. Thanks

Ummmm I am not 100% on this. Maybe 99%. But, I am pretty sure that the sending unit doesn't get "power" as in +12volts. The gauge does for lighting only. The fuel level part of the gauge is simply an ohm meter reading variance to ground caused by the fuel level float connected to a rheostat changing impedance as the fuel level increased or decreases.

Not talking about the sender. The gauge itself. It has a ignition 12v connection

on a whole lot of boats the "ignition" wire is purple. when the key is turned to the on position there should be 12 volts to the gauges also. if there isnt then simply jump from another gauge. make sure your using a good ground when testing with a test light

It's correct that your fuel gauge is just a special purpose ohmmeter. It does need a power source to measure the resistance of the tank's sender. Yes, the marine standard is for an ignition-switched power source wire to be purple. If you look at all the other gauges you will see that most have a purple connection. (Water pressure won't though, for instance.) Insure that the 12V terminal of the fuel gauge is somehow daisy-chained to at least one of the other gauges that are on the purple wire chain. I have never seen a Stratos with any factory fusing on the gauge power wiring. (I have owned 2 and worked on numerous others.)

You say "I checked the ignition power wire at the fuel gauge and no power." When you checked this, where did you put the other lead of the voltmeter? (Be sure you put it on a valid Ground.) If you tried using the GND connection on the gauge, measure again and use a GND elsewhere, like a gauge you know is working (boat's voltmeter?) In this way, you can discover if the broken circuit is on the + or - terminal of the fuel gauge.

When you turn on the NAV lights, is the face of the gauge illuminated correctly? This would tell me the GND is probably good.

Has this gauge ever worked? New issue or?

pretty much what ntch says.....

no fuse...purple wire.. same as ign. purple on tha tach.... tach works, you can pick up purple from there or trace from fuel gauge back to where it originates and repair... gauge ground should be good if light works...

gauge lights will be blue...JAN, colors may vary if some hack has been under tha dash!

I have seen gauges that have a dedicated GND for the lamp, and another GND post for the gauge itself. In those instances, the dedicated lamp wiring is attached to the bulb base assembly that gets removed to replace the bulb.

The ignition wire? No ignition power post on 2 cycle outboards. The fuel gauge gets its power from the accessory post of the ignition switch.

post on tach should be labeled "IGN." with tha "key switched hot" purple is tha one i'm referin' to Gary......

tach and fuel or "normally" tha only two dash things (gauges) that power up with ign switched hot (purple)... others along with lights and acc. power up with a different switch power (red) from battery.

The fuel gauge has one connection labeled ignition, ground and sender.

Very good point TLW! Now let's see what he says! Gonzz, I'm curious why you are checking this in the first place. Please elaborate. I assume your 201 has twin tanks. With ignition ON, does the needle jump as you switch the electrical switch from tank 1 to tank 2? (That's only going to switch where the gauge reads from, but it should jump the needle typically if the gauge has power.)

I have a single 50 gallon tank. I am turning the key to ignition. No power on purple wire. Gauge needle don't move at all. I just bought a new fuel gauge and will install it tonight.

are you checkin' purple to tha guage ground? if so recheck purple to a different ground on one of tha other gauges..this will eliminate tha ground as tha problem....

does your tach work?
