I've got a 7'3'' Falcon Cara Amistad I'm thinking about using for 10 XDs and large swimbaits. I think it will work because it has a somewhat soft tip and the length to sling it out there a ways. My only concern is that the rod is rated for 1.5 oz maximum weight. Should I be worried about breaking the tip on a cast?

You should do yourself a favor and get an 8ft glass rod....trust me with that.

I agree with the 8 foot glass rod.

Also, what size/weight swimbaits?

With either bait try and stay over the 7'6 mark. Just don't look at lure and line ratings either also consider the length of your handle has well. With baits the size of the 10XD and swimbaits depends on the size of your swimbaits the longer handle works extremely for lobbing those baits& out there. I personally like Power Tackles XLC 7'11 or there SB5- 7'11 both have a good handle length for those heavy baits.

I think it would do ok but I agree that you would probably want to get a longer rod. I am talking more the handle. It is nice to be able to stick that handle up under your arm for leverage. Deep cranking can beat you down especially if your long lining.

Get a MH swim bait rod about 7'10" to 8' with a moderate or mod/fast tip that can handle up to a 2-3 oz bait.

Big crankbaits and big swimbaits are completely different animals. I have a Dobyns 805 that works great for big cranks. DD22's, 10XD's... Launches them well but with even a "medium" sized swimbait(2oz-4oz) the "big/deep crankbait rods" are way overloaded. Big swimbaits over 4oz? Forget about it! There is a huge difference between a regular heavy action casting rod and a heavy action swimbait specific rod. Apples and oranges. If you are actually talking about BIG swimbaits your Amistad will be WAY under powered. But for big crankbaits it will do fine. An 8' big crank rod is nice but your 7'3" Falcon will be sufficient. Side note: if you are actually going to fish LARGE swimbaits: I didn't want to invest a bunch and bought a Dobyns Fury 795SB for medium-large swimbaits and A-rigs. Was skeptical of a $120 Dobyns but its a nice rod.

Kistler makes a 7'11" heavy action Mark Rose Off Shore rod labeled for a 10XD , sexy spoon and Swimbaits. rated up to 3 oz and 25lb line. Slap a Lew's Super Duty reel on it and you can fish those baits all day without killing yourself!

I use a Dobyns 806 cb for 10 XD's. They make an 80y that are specific for swimbaits. I would use that Falcon for C-Rigs and Frogs.

The Amistad will work, but not well. You'll be giving up distance which is important on XD cranking.

I throw 8 and 10XDs on a 7'6 cranking Duckett Micro Magic. Works fine for me. I usually long line it.

I've found that the Dobyns 806HSB swimbait rod has enough tip and the right amount of backbone for a 10xd as well as bigger swimbaits. Rated to 8oz.. Cranks and swimbaits don't usually fit into the same category, but this rod fits the bill for 10xds.
