Hi all. I am again stationed on Fort Hood and used to love bankfishing for bass in the training areas. I don't have a boat or kayak. Anyone have some intel on where a guy can catch some black bass from the bank. I find lakes and ponds on the map and all seem to be fenced off or down roads that are blocked for construction. Not cool. Without having to drive all the way to Belton, is there anywhere to fish? Catfish is good too. I have my Fort Hood access pass, so TAs are good too. Thanks for any info you might have.

Welcome to the area. You might want to try Gravel Road Crossing upriver from Stillhouse Hollow Lake. There is a primitive park there and you have miles of riverbank to fish upstream and downstream. It is in the middle of a wildlife management area. Was just up there a few weeks ago and caught undersize largemouth bass and some nice white bass. The white bass and crappie will continue moving into that area and are fun to catch on light tackle.

I just retired after 27 years. I was stationed here from 2006 to 2012. then it was Honduras and Carson. I have gone out several times over the past few weeks to my old haunts. But haven't been able to land any fish. I have tried Nolan Creek off WS Young, Airfield Lake, Nolan Creek in Belton, did well with the stocked trout while they lasted, Sulpher Creek in Lampasas, Both Spillways below Belton and Still House. Of course all I do is fly fish, but that never stopped me before. Thinking about trying out the Gravel Crossing tomorrow morning once I put the girls on the school bus.

I used to live in Copperas Cove until August of last year. Gravel Crossing to me was always a white bass location especially at this time of the year, and if you're bank fishing make sure to go when there's been a few dry days because walking along the sides can be slippery at some points. There was a cove between Gravel Crossing and the lake that I used to pull some black bass out of, but it was only for fun when white bass fishing. As far as the Fort Hood lakes I know there's one by the new Cove overpass that used to be alright (4-5 years ago), and one by the Blora entrance but if you're going that far you might as well as fish Belton. Still house has a little marina that I saw one guy pull a 4 pounder out of the only time I was there just by throwing his lure along side it. Belton has the boathouse too, depending on the wind you can park at the boathouse and walk around the side of the hill for a small cove that used to block the winds and that spot normally would be a hit for me. The lakes have filled considerably since last years spawns however, so I don't know how accurate this information may be.
