Looking to see if anyone has deep knowledge on slip bobbers. A good buddy of the family (in late 70's or early 80's) said he knew for sure these bobbers were over 50 years old.





Said his grandfather made them of Bear Grass stems (after they'd bloom and become hard enough to widdle on). He told us how his grandfather would use the string from Bull Durham tobacco and he was thoroughly convinced that if his grandfather didn't invent them, he was the first in his area to make 'em.

A little Google searching and I found this patent (1966), which would be a good 10-15 years after my buddy knew of his grandfather making his first bobbers. 1966 Patent 3381407

Surely my buddy's grandfather didn't invent the first slip bobbers in the nation? Buddy wanted me to find out what I could.... any insight is appreciated.

Also wish I could send everyone some of these bobbers -- honor to me just holding them today and looking at them.

Really cool, At the Lone Star Brewery in San Antonio they have a great collection of old fishing lures but I didn't see anything like that. I guess that's why we continue to tinker, with making our own jigs and lures, I might get some Balsawood and try that for the spring fishing

Got to love the "Old School"! Lot of history around old tackle!

I love seeing old tackle and what was the new models back then. I have my grandfathers old bomber lures.

He also had these old boogers that he wasn't sure of the age..... I'll make a separate thread in a few days if nobody recognizes them.. He had 20-30 and gave me 2 (he offered all of them to me... such a nice older gentleman). I'm going to strip down those 2 and make 'em fancy, two-toned blue, and give them back as a present.

In the 1950's up for a number of years people made corks for something to do. Most of them was never use, but there was nice ones around. Almost all was made with a case pocket knife. The round cheap plastic corks was what was use by the few that did use them. And they would be about 2 1/2 inch's to 3 inch's in size, sure would take a big fish to pull them under. What you have to understand we did not have lakes to fish it was all creeks and rivers. Texoma and Caddo was there but a long ways off in those days. The corks was made by guys whittling, and the way I was told a long time ago that is where you take a tree and cut it down to size for a tooth pick.
The jigs have hand made lead heads on them, but a lot of us to do that type of jig. Chuck and Deb's still carry the lead heads and they are call tying collar jigs. They are low on hook sizes and weights but will have them in soon. But they do have some sizes now.

i know a man that made a mold to build um and knows the history. They are good fish catchers...
