New to the Forum hope somebody can help. Just bought a 10 foot pelican boat, the guy i bought it from got it from academy in July of last year but never registered it. since it is going to have a trolly motor it needs to be registered and titled. He gave me the paper tags that they gave him but he says that all that was provided to him. Anybody know what i need to do to get it registered and titled?

I think both of you have some facts muddied. Unless he bought a trailer, there are no "paper tags". There's no such thing for a boat. Google "TPWD Boat Title" and read. It's unclear what to tell you to do as I don't have a clue what paperwork you actually have. I forget how Academy handles those sales now. There may actually be a title he received in the mail from TPWD some time after the purchase. If he doesn't understand boats/titles he may have tossed it as a junkmail item as it is a simple perforated form folded into a letter.
You can look up the serial number of the boat on TPWD to see if they have a title for it. They'll list the owner's name if they do. If so, he'll have to get a replacement title, then agree to transfer that to you. BTW, you should never buy a boat in Texas without getting a signed-off title along with it. Without that, you haven't really bought it legally.

Here's the deal tpw will require him to title the boat in his name if that paper has his name on it. The boat registration and boat title are two separate things. You will need both for the boat you now have.

i just bought it yesterday, the paper tags he gave me have the TX Department number and has the serial number. it shows the date it was bought and the serial number for the boat and his name and address. he is looking to see if they mailed him a title, but he said that he never registered it. the boat is brand new and just a small boat with no motor or trailer. I just checked the texas number and serial number and it does not show it ever been titled or registered

Call TP&W and ask the pros that know. But Cat Finder is right.
