Was thinking about a single 36V battery for trolling motor and 12V for the motor of course. What do you guys think or what are your experience's with this?? Good or Bad idea??

The good they last forever The bad they are very expensive + the cost of the charger. Over priced to me.

I run 3 3110's and they are awesome, but very expensive. It is amazing how well the trolling motor performs with them!

I was doing some reading where they say they are prone to catching fire?? Thermal Runaway? I figured the weight savings alone would be awesome. But having to change the charging system and all could make the price difference quite a bit.

LoneRanger,
Just questions:
Have you found a East Penn or Johnson Controls or EnerSys or any other major or established battery manufacturer name selling a marine use lithium ion battery? Do you wonder why not?
Try to determine that the recent startups Relion or Lithium Pros have ever manufactured, or designed, or even hold a single patent for design of a lithium ion cell.
Or find a non-contract factory that the present marine lithium ion battery assembly type manufacturers actually invested in and own that can assemble Lithium Ion cells (made by others) inside cases with their labels attached on the outside.
Do you feel the present marketers/makers of Lithium Ion batteries assembled/sold for use in a boat will survive and compete and be around to honor their warranties when a major marine battery manufacturer enters the market?

Listen to Lou! This idea will clean out your pockets, and may burn up your boat along with whatever is around it if thermal runaway is the order of the day.
Want to know how much this "investment" would "save" you? FIgure out what weight savings you might get. Remove that much expendable weight from your boat. Examples: mobile tackle store, 1/4 tank of fuel instead of full, or....just remove 2 of the TM batteries, all 3 if you want. Two of the TM batteries is probably what might be saved, and the weight would even be removed from the real savings location on the boat. Now go run the boat, check/compare your speed before/after, then figure out what that would save you on a tournament day.
Many guys might run no more than an hour at speed on a fishing day. At 5 mph savings, that's 5-6 minutes saved! A lot of days, lake conditions may prevent high-speed runs at all, and those pricey batteries actually save you nothing.
I won't be swapping mine out because I refuse to blissfully take on true undue risk. The technology is promising, but it has serious kinks and isn't there yet for me. My boat/garage are too valuable. BTW, I'm an electrical engineer with decades of experience in technology.

I would not do it. I do not think the technology is advanced enough. It does show promise (as already mentioned) but the risk out-weighs the gain for me.

The Remote Control car racing industry has been using these batteries for a few years. They are VERY prone to catching fire. They have to be discharged and charged in a particular way. A $1500 RC Racing car is one thing,,,,,a $50,000 bass boat is something else.

Not exactly true!
The RC batteries prone to catching fire are Lithium Polymer, NOT Lithium Ions. Different cell voltage chemistry and charging routine required. The polymer batteries are very prone to catching on fire, ions cells are generally no worse a risk than standard battery cells.

Right now they still "claim" they last 10 years. NOBODY knows that yet. I wouldn't buy any until some bigger brands show that this is a viable alternative. That will also lower cost.

Y'all go right ahead. My big comfy Ranger is only going to fly when I'm towing, no matter what I do, LOL.
Some boats have burned also, and it was just a total coincidence there were new-tech batteries in them. Did Lane's boat have them? Notice how the discussion of which battery he had was very quiet?

I've looked into these VERY seriously and the end result from talking with many people including a couple experts on the topic was its kind of like solar power....in the end its probably the answer, but its simply not ready yet due to cost of entry. And that is coming from a guy in the oil business.

I have been doing this on a small scale for two years; using a battery tender lithium ion battery to run my fish finder. They recommend a special lithium ion battery charger to charge them, but I've been using a regular battery tender jr charger with no issues. Pros--significantly smaller, last longer, much lighter, won't spill, can place them sideways if needed, recharge faster Cons--price; probably should use special charger.

I looked at the Battery Tender stuff when I saw the big cost difference from their batteries to others Lithium's and they were very clear with me their batteries are NOT rated for bass boats. Glad your set up has been working but I'm not going to trust them on my boat

I know for a fact lithium ion batteries are rated as DG (dangerous goods) for international shipping purposes because of flammability.
