I use a 6.6' MH rod rigged with 20lb mono on a 6:4 reel. Works for me, you can experiment with different lines but definitely stick with a shorter rod. More control and less fatigue.

6' 10" medium heavy rod with 15-20 pound mono on a 6.4 or 7.1 speed reel. I put a swivel about 12-24 inches from the spoon to prevent line twist

Shimano Chronarch CI4+ This is the reel I use. I use the high speed gear ratio. You'll need the high speed for when a fish hits your bait on the fall and you need to reel in your slack fast. It has a super smooth retrieve and quality components. G. Loomis IMX MBR I use the 844C MBR for vertical spoons. It's a 7'0" rod and that's long enough for long casts but short enough for casts in a tight spot. It's a super sensitive rod and it has plenty of backbone for a solid hookset. Sunline Structure FC I use the 18lb Structure FC 90% of the time; purely for it's strength and impact resistance. It's also pretty sensitive, and you'll need that to feel the fish hit your bait on the fall. Have fun with it and fish what you're confident in!

I throw a jigging spoon a lot and have introduced a lot of my clients to it as well. My favorite set up is:
Lure: Wareagle jigging spoon - 7/8oz - Color doesn't really seem to matter This spoon comes with a swivel already built in and a premium hook right out of the package
Rod: Dobyns 704C Any rod you would typically use for a spinnerbait. You will want some tip but you will also need some back bone to fight some fish
Line: Seaguar Abrazx 15lb I like the abrazx because it is more durable than a lot of other lines and it can withstand a plug knocker rubbing against it better than most. You will stay tangled with braid.
Reel: Daiwa Tatula 7:1 You want a high speed reel because they are going to come to the surface with the quickness. That is usually how I can immediately tell if I have on a black bass or a trash fish like a white or drum.
