Welp... I'm moving to Texas. What are the best lakes in and around the San Antonio area? I've been fishing out east for the last 9 years. I'm used to Kentucky Lake and Lake Gaston. I'm guessing the lakes in SW Texas don't have many trees? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You're within three hours or less of three of the best lakes in the state (Amistad, Choke Canyon and Falcon). Unfortunately, Falcon is the only one of the three fishing decent of late. Fun fishing for numbers of ~3-4lb bass, check out Fayette County Lake. Also, the Austin area lakes as well as Bastrop. Braunig and Calaveras are on your doorstep. Those provide multi-species angling though the lakes and grounds have deteriorated over the past five to ten years.

Welcome to Texas and best of luck to you, thirtysixit. welcome

p.s. - Don't forget to check into the lakes AND RIVERS N and W of your new home base. Deep, clear water with lots of rock. Like back home thumb

Try the Guadalupe River lakes. I live about an hour east of San Antonio and if you want to take a tour of Lake Wood, I'll be happy to show you the lake.

Two types of Texans... Those that were born here and those that got here as fast as they could. I'm of the latter. Fouzman summed it up nice, but I throw in OH Ivie as well (also not fishing great right now on account of the low water)

So basically to sum it up... Choke was good for a few years, Amistad was great for a few years & Falcon was the best for a few years. Now all 3 of them suck.

What is the predominant forage in Canyon lake? I'm going to be close to that lake. Does it have shad in it or do I need to focus on blue gill baits?

I have not fished all the lakes around San Antonio but know most of the lakes North of San Antonio and around Austin. As mentioned, the Guadalupe River system has Canyon, Dunlap, McQueeny, and Placid. Austin has Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake and Decker(Walter E Long), with Bastrop not to far away. If you make it up to Austin, let me know and I'll take you to Decker.

No such thing as two types of Texans. You are either born here and are a Texan or you AINT. And never will be.

Honestly, it's not a great fishing lake. Very little baitfish, bluegills and some shad. Search the fishing report thread for Canyon info. If you're used to great fishing then you're in for a big shock here.

Canyon has both shad and blue gill (also called perch in Texas) in it. It is a deep clear lake with largemouth, guadalupe, and smallmouth bass.

Texas is a great place. There is definitely no denying that, but those Texas girls love them some Oklahoma boys. That's how I've found myself moving to San Antonio.....

Dont forget about lake LBJ. An hour to an hour and half north of SA straight up 281 in Marble falls. That lake is awesome.

Canyon is fishing really good right now as well, but it doesnt have the quality that other lakes in the area have. Although I will say last weekend several teams left LBJ after the tournament to go fish Canyon. Go figure. I hear it's that good right now.

Plus #1. Also Lake Dunlap is producing some nice bass this year. I know of two 10 plus pounders that have been caught this past couple of weeks. coolio
