I break off a few fish each year, have short term anguish but generally accept that it will happen again. I fish as a hobby as well as an avid tournament angler. When practicing or fun fishing I down size my line strength and rod weights. When money is on the line I step up line test to avoid getting broken off and re-tie often. The mix makes for a good balance of strike to catch ratio and still makes most outings fun even if I don't hook any giants that day.

None. And I use 12-15lb InvisX. I have lost fish...but never to a line break. I can also pull my boat to a stump TRYING to break off a really bad hang up. I use a snell knot on worm hooks and a simple improved clinch on hard baits. A palomar on drop shot and braided lines.

3 or 4 break-offs using 65# Sufix 832 and 20# original blue stren....all because I neglected to retie after being hung up in timber and/or on rocks.

I think I broke off 4 bass. 2 on super light line and 2 that I can't really explain, 1 on 16 and 1 on 20. All fluoro.

If you are meticulous about tying and retying knots, fluoro is awesome.

Once I kept breaking off the braid on on my Carolina Riggin' rod, I couldn't figure out what was up. Turns out the ceramic insert in the rod tip had cracked, everytime that rod would load up, PING.

Time spent inspecting gear, is well worth your while. Grab some Q-tips and run them around your guides, is they are damaged, the inserts will pull the qtip apart.

On a normal year, I break off very infrequently, 1 or 2 times a year, but I retie quite a bit.

None last year.
Use 50lb braid -suffix 832-when I have to only.
Also mostly use 15-25lb big game mono.
I use Palomar knot.
Check and retie often!!!-I'm weird and obsessed about that,
Rare fluoro use but if I do I'm even more obsessed about fresh line and perfect knot- wish I knew the best fluoro knot- I don't think anybody really knows.
Check all rod guides.
Use correct equipment for line type, correct drag or thumb spooling for line weight.
Smooth bore on sinkers.
Eye of worm hooks all welded- no place to catch line.
Fresh line almost every trip, esp with mono I just respool every trip, braid of course lasts a long time if treated right.
No line to line knots or extra knots-I use McCoy mcstoppers for c-rig.
I hate breaking off big fish so I have learned the hard way to keep risk low.

One post already mentioned it but once I kept breaking line only to find that I had a bad rod guide.
Outside of that, I've never broken line on a fish. Last year there was a 9-13 on 65lb braid down to some 5 lb fish on 10b.
I use braid, flouro, and mono, depending on the circumstances.

I didn't break off any fish last year, but I use braid exclusively, MAYBE a leader in clear water. Good and frequent knots go a long way.

Unless I'm in the northern pike infested waters of Minnesota...then 3 or 4 times a day!
